The United Nations Secretary General at the time, Kofi Annan, had put forward a solution plan aptly named the Annan plan, which included all of Cyprus’ discussions from June 1968 when the inter-communal talks first began.
Tens of thousands of Turkish Cypriots flocked to the streets to support the Annan plan process and their efforts had ousted President DenktaČ™ who was the leader then.
However, Greek Cypriot president Papadopoulos led an effective No campaign in south Cyprus which had led to the GC’s voting 75% No in the referendum and where TC’s voted 65% Yes.
