ReLEx Eye treatment in 22 seconds by Department of Ophthalmology of Near East University Hospital [NEU]

It was revealed that by the end of February, 2016, Near East University Hospital will be facilitating latest laser technology, smile laser will be used to treat eyes within 22 seconds.

According to Head of Department of Ophthalmology of Near East University Hospital; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Koray Karadayı, ReLex SMILE Laser will be provided to the service of patients suffering from: dry eye syndrome, thin cornea, advanced or mild nearsightedness (myopia), and astigmatism.

This latest technology is expressed to be minimally invasive and to be flapless surgery enabling lenticule and a small incision of 2 – 4 mm is created inside the intact cornea, enabling an 80 % smaller side-cut as compared to a LASIK flap. Furthermore, 30 % less cap cut is needed.

Eye treatment within 22 seconds…

It was revealed that only a single device, ReLex SMILE Laser, was used for the treatment of the eye in a single step, providing a treatment within 22 seconds. This technology can be used to treat short-sighted patients, often even those with very high prescriptions, dry eyes, contact lens intolerance, and / or thinner corneas. ReLEx SMILE (often known simply as SMILE, which stands for Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is, by its less invasive nature, a method that allows correction of even higher myopic prescriptions than previously treatable by other available laser eye surgeries.

According to the statement by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Koray Karadayı, ReLEx SMILE, a flap is not created, so the healing time of the patients is expressed to be faster than conventional LASIK. The vision is 80% better instantly and reaches 100% within a few days.

Treatment of Myopia -10 and Astigmatism up to +/- 5…

ReLEx represents the beginning of a new era in refractive surgery, on the grounds of its significant advantages in terms of the patient’s comfort, since there is no need to pass from one instrument to another – as in the LASIK procedure – there is no need for the patient to change their position. This is the main reason why the procedure only takes a few minutes. Furthermore, ReLEx enables to preserve the cornea biomechanics thus obtaining the natural structure of the eye, treating myopia up to -10 and astigmatism of +/- 5.

It was expressed that patients did not loose vision during surgery, and that the surgery was quiet and odourless leading to minimum discomfort and a fast healing time. It was said that the treatment showed its full results quickly and stabilised within a week or two.

EMU Fine Arts Club Hosted Activities under the Theme “All Barriers Disappear through the Power of Arts”

Within the framework of Eastern Mediterranean University’s 21st Spring Festival activities, arts events organised by EMU Fine Arts Club took place under the theme “All Barriers Disappear through the Power of Arts”.

The open workshop taking place under the curatorship of Ayhatun Ateşin hosted arts activities on creative drama exercises, storytelling workshops as well as painting, marbling, felting and wood printing activities and a photography workshop entitled “We Overcome Barriers with Photos”.

Following the workshops taking place with the contributions of the photography artist Faruk Akbaş and Cyprus Photography Arts Association, photos taken by the students of Karakum Rehabilitation Center were exhibited at EMU Fine Arts Club stand on 21 May. The aforesaid project aimed to improve  mentally disabled children’s visual perception and awareness towards life and to support their interaction with the environment through the power of photography.

Artist Ayhatun Ateşin stated her views about the organisation as follows: “As EMU Fine Arts Club, we believe that the only way to increase each individual’s awareness and sensitivity towards societal problems is through their involvement in interactive activities in arts. While individuals dealing with any field of culture or arts stay away from social risks, they will gain the skill to give meaning to life through learning in arts. Through the power of arts, we aim to provide the disabled with a context to better express themselves as well as to establish a bridge between them and the society through arts.  Whilst the participants are discovering how to paint, make sculpture or work on other relevant areas of arts, they also learn how to merge artistic skills with artistic thinking.
