EMU Civil Engineering Department Final Year Students Produced a Floating Canoe Made of Concrete


In a move that can be rivaled to a Hollywood movie stunt, the final year students of EMU Civil Engineering department has produced a canoe/boat made of concrete that can float on water. This amazing feat was designed in the laboratories of the Civil Engineering faculty of Eastern Mediterranean University, EMU by the final year students.

While expressing joy that the project worked as they envisaged, the members of the engineering team pointed out that it was 'a combination of long hours, determination, strong will and a deep sense of purpose'

Near East University Faculty of Engineering receives the top engineering accreditation of Europe


Near East University Faculty of Engineering was awarded with EUR-ACE accreditation certificate which is the European quality label for engineering degree programs

ENAEE, the top European network for accreditation of engineering education, has awarded Near East University Faculty of Engineering with EUR-ACE accreditation certificate….

Near East University Faculty of Engineering has been accredited and awarded with EUR-ACE label by ENAEE (European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education). Based in Brussels, ENAEE is the top European network that authorizes accreditation and quality assurance agencies to award the EUR-ACE label to accredited engineering degree programs of a higher education institution.

The programs offered by Near East University Faculty of Engineering were previously accredited by ASIIN e. V. (Accreditation Agency for Degree Programs in Engineering, Informatics, the Natural Sciences and Mathematics), which is an international accreditation agency that based in Germany.

NEU Biomedical Engineering students design 3-dimensional printer and prosthetic hands!


According a press statement released by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of Near East University, students of Biomedical Engineering Department, who designed a 3D printer and successfully took out the prints of the bimedically designed objects, pointed out that the cost of the printer they designed is much more cheaper than the similar ones sold in market.

NEU Students also said that they are very proud to complete the project with quality education, support and motivation provided by the Biomedical Engineering Department.


The other important project, “prosthetic hand”, was designed through the use of 3D printer, the Arduino system and EMG signals (muscle movement sensor) were used, and movements of prosthesis hand and fingers were implemented.

NEU Faculty of Engineering Departments Granted European (ASIIN) Accreditation


Faculty of Engineering of Near East University accredited by ASIIN which is headquartered in Germany and accredits programs affiliated in engineering, maths, information and natural sciences.

According to a press statement released by Press and Public Relations Directorate of Near East University, the programs of the Near East University, which were previously accredited by ACPE, JCI, EDEXEL, IACBE and some other accreditation foundations, now received accreditation from ASIIN which is headquartered in Germany and mainly accredits engineering, maths, information and natural science programs.

Prof. Dr. Fahreddin Sadıkoğlu, Vice Rector of Near East University, stated that the ASIIN Commission, holding a meeting on 11 December 2015 regarding accreditation of Faculty of Engineering Departments, decided to accredit 10 undergraduate and postgraduate programs of Faculty of Engineering, including Department of Electric-Electronic Engineering, Department of Computer Engineering, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Computer Information Systems.

Prof. Dr. Sadıkoğlu pointed out that the progress of accreditation to ASIIN lasted a year and during this period the pre-evaluation reports of the departments including research and education activities were prepared and submitted to ASIIN, the subject specialists of ASIIN examined the reports, inspection committees each including five subject specialist from various universities of Europe carried out on spot inspection and evaluation at the Faculty of Engineering, reports prepared by these committees submitted to ASIIN and finally ASIIN made a decision for accreditation of programs of Faculty of Engineering.

Accreditation of engineering programs of Near East University by ASIIN which takes part within the European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education (EQAR) is an solid indication that the programs, research and education activities of Near East University are at the same level of the pioneering universities of Europe.

Prof. Dr. Sadıkoğlu said that accreditation of 10 programs of Near East University by ASIIN which is a part of European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education of Europe is important for higher education sector of TRNC.

EMU Mechanical Engineering Department Achieves Further Academic Success


With the recent increase of the number of academic publications per academic staff member to three, EMU Mechanical Engineering Department has obtained further success in the academic dimension. With the publication of a total of 25 articles in SCI (Science Citation Index) and SCIE (Science Citation Index Expanded), the number of publications per academic staff reached 3.13 in 2014.

The articles published in the said journals in 2014 focused on solar energy, thermodynamics, water refining, computer assisted production, metal design and biomechanics. The same department also boasts increasing number of students. While the department provided study opportunities to 586 students during the 2013-2014 Academic Year, the student numbers reached 699 during the 2014-2015 Academic Year. It is worth mentioning that 27 of these students who are carrying out their PhD studies at the said department provide important contributions to the reseach activities taking place within the department.

Eastern Mediterranean University Engineering Faculty continues to bring up engineers equipped with high-quality and professional skills, thanks to the faculty’s educational quality at international standards as well as the accreditations. Having started its educational activities in 1979, EMU Engineering Faculty provides undergraduate study opportunities through Computer, Information Systems, Electrical and Electronic, Industrial, Civil, Business, Mechanical, Mechatronics and Software Engineering Programs. In line with its mission and program objectives, EMU Engineering Faculty brings up engineers who possess sectoral awareness, entrepreneurial and academic skills. The faculty also offers value added services through 12 double major programs, student and academic staff exchange with universities in the EU countries as well as the USA and Canada and active memberships in student organisations and associations with international recognition.

Dean of EMU Engineering Faculty Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın stated that students of their faculty have the opportunity of receiving double-major diplomas only by studying an extra year within the faculty. Prof. Dr. Hocanın also added that they offer high quality study opportunities through 11 programs.

Eastern Mediterranean University [EMU] Civil Engineering Department Awaiting New Students


Having been providing high quality study opportunities through undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degree programs under Eastern Mediterranean University Engineering Faculty since 1979, Civil Engineering Department boasts 36 years of experience in the field. The programs offered by the department have been delivered in the medium of English since its establishment. As of the 2012-2013 Academic Year, the department has also started offering undergraduate study opportunities in Turkish.

ABET Accreditation

Civil Engineering English program has been accredited by ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology), the most prestigious board in the field of engineering. Boasting internationally recognised educational opportunities, the department aims to produce well-informed graduates who possess the skills, information, and experience in pursuing success in the changing and developing world.  Along with a solid foundation in the civil engineering education, the department also offers an educational system combining theory and practice in line with the latest technological developments.

State of the Art Laboratories

EMU Civil Engineering Department Chair Prof. Dr. Özgür Eren stated that the department has proven its quality both at a national and international level through well-equipped laboratories, high quality education and research activities. Sophisticated and well-equipped Hydraulics, Geology, Transportation, Construction Materials, Structural Mechanics, Construction Technology and Management, Soil Mechanics and Computer laboratories play a major role in the professional and practical development of the undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Stressing the unique quality of the newly established structural mechanics and virtual reality labs, Prof. Dr. Eren added that through the aforesaid labs which are used for educational and research purposes, real-life experiments yielding real findings may be conducted.

Prof. Dr. Eren put forth that in the virtual reality laboratory, users witness actual engineering practices in a virtual environment enabled by sterescopic glasses or modified monitors. Through the use of the virtual reality, the users may conduct three dimensional analysis without needing the actual building or a maquette.

Education at International Standards

Stating that the department boasts over 20 full and part time academic staff members and 18 research assistants, Prof. Dr. Eren added that over 1000 students from 40 different countries study in their department. Prof. Dr. Eren put forth that all faculty members have expertise in their fields since they have been trained by prominent international institutions. Prof. Dr. Eren went on to state that academic staff members who have gained expertise in the fields of structural mechanics, structural management, building materials, geotechnic, transportation and hydraulics are leading academicians within the region. Prof. Dr. Eren added that along with undergraduate and postgraduate study opportunities, the department offers consultancy services within the framework of civic involvement practices.

Prof. Dr. Eren stated that the department boasts over 2000 graduates who have pursued employment opportunities in different countries. Since the construction sector plays an important role in a country’s economy, a considerable number of employment opportunities are offered to civil engineering graduates in developing countries.

Stressing the importance of graduating from a department which possesses international recognition and accreditation as well as high quality academic staff and laboratories, Prof. Dr. Eren recommended prospective students to consider these important factors whilst choosing their universities and departments.

Students of the CIU Engineering Faculty successful in the Inter-University Competition on Energy Efficiency in Turkey.


The short film, prepared by students of CIU Engineering Faculty Mehmet Sıdar, Melih Peker, Tarık Şaban Genç, and Tuğba Sargın, was awarded 3rd place in an international competition organized by the Denizli branch of the Turkish Association for Energy Efficiency.

A 3 minute public service announcement, the short film was entitled “Uyan-Enver Verimli”. It was created with the aim of raising awareness on the efficient use and preservation of energy and natural resources.
The winning students t also earned the right to undertake an internship with corporations that belong to the Turkish Association for Energy Efficiency, including Koç Holdings.

EMU Computer Engineering Department Website Design Competition Winners Announced


Winners of the Website Design Competition organised by Eastern Mediterranean University Engineering Faculty, Computer Engineering Department and Uçanok Group of Companies have been announced. Within the framework of the competition, students of EMU designed a website for Uçanok  Group of Companies.

Wishing to renew its existing website, Uçanok Construction Company decided to continue their collaboration with EMU during the 2014-2015 Academic Year. Previously the company collaborated with EMU in concrete strength competition carried out within EMU Civil Engineering Department. EMU Engineering Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın, Vice Deans Assist. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ünveren  and Assist. Prof. Dr. Emine Atasoylu, Computer Engineering Department Chair Prof. Dr. Işık Aybay, Assistant Department Chair Assist. Prof. Dr. Yıltan Bitirim, Electrical and Electronic Department Chair Prof. Dr. Hasan Demirel, Uçanok Group of Companies Director Ahmet Uçanok, staff member responsible for Administrative Affairs and Informatics Mihriban Şemi, students and academics attended the award ceremony.

While the winner of the competition has become Computer Engineering Department student Mete Kabak, Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department student Chukwudi Okechukwu Akahara came second and Computer Engineering Department student  Mustafa Demircan came third. The winner of the competition was awarded 1500 TL and those who qualified for the second and third places received certificates and plaques.

Certificates of appreciation were also awarded to Assist. Prof. Dr. Dr. Cem Ergün  and Communication Faculty research assistant Engin Aluç, who both contributed to the website design competition which took place through the collaboration of EMU Engineering Faculty, Computer Engineering Department Chair Prof. Dr. Işık Aybay, Assistant Department Chair  Assist. Prof. Dr. Yıltan Bitirim, Uçanok Companies Group Director Ahmet Uçanok and Administrative Affairs and Informatics Representative Mihriban Şemi.

Prior to the ceremony, Dean Prof. Dr. Hocanın, Department Chair Prof. Dr. Aybay, Uçanok Group of Companies Ahmet Uçanok  and Administrative Affairs and Informatics Representative Mihriban Şemi delivered speeches focusing on the importance of sectoral collaboration. The website design of the winning student will be used by Uçanok Group of Companies.

EMU Civil Engineering Department Organised a Competition “Concrete with the Highest Resistance Level”


Eastern Mediterranean Univeristy Engineering Faculty Civil Engineering Department’s annual competition entitled “Concrete with the Highest Resistance Level” will be hosting the students of Civil Engineering Departments from TRNC Universities.

EMU Civil Engineering Department stated that competitions as such not only give students the opportunity to put theory into practice but also contribute to the development of competitive skills of the students. The Department added that the competition has simple rules and students may take part in the event with a single cube concrete sample.

Taking place under the sponsorship of BEM Ltd. (Boğaz Industry and Mining), the competition will award 600 TL to the team qualifying for the first place, 300 TL for the second place and 200 TL  for the third place. A total of 25 teams from EMU and Cyprus International University Civil Engineering Departments took plart in the concrete laying step of the competition which took place on 17 and 18 March 2015.

The pressure resistance of the submitted concrete samples will be measured on 14 and 15 April 2015 and winners will be specified, accordingly. A certificate and award ceremony will be organised in May.

"On behalf of our faculty, staff and community of graduate students welcome to the Department of Civil Engineering at Eastern Mediterranean University, one of the top-rated departments in the region offering the following degrees: BS, MS and PhD in Civil Engineering. We have more than 30 years history of producing high quality graduates who make a real difference nationally and internationally. Our department is accredited by ABET in 2010.

There are well equipped and sophisticated extensive teaching and research laboratories including: construction materials, construction technology and management, hydraulics, geotechnique, structural mechanics and transportation. The Department also has a large computer laboratory. These facilities play a major role in the professional and practical development of our students.

Civil Engineering Department consists of 10 full time faculty members, 9 part time teaching staff, 18 research assistants, 5 personnel and over 1500 graduates. There are 800 undergraduate and 120 graduate level students in the department. All of the faculty members have national and international reputations.
