Within the framework of Eastern Mediterranean University’s 21st Spring Festival activities, arts events organised by EMU Fine Arts Club took place under the theme “All Barriers Disappear through the Power of Arts”.

The open workshop taking place under the curatorship of Ayhatun Ateşin hosted arts activities on creative drama exercises, storytelling workshops as well as painting, marbling, felting and wood printing activities and a photography workshop entitled “We Overcome Barriers with Photos”.

Following the workshops taking place with the contributions of the photography artist Faruk Akbaş and Cyprus Photography Arts Association, photos taken by the students of Karakum Rehabilitation Center were exhibited at EMU Fine Arts Club stand on 21 May. The aforesaid project aimed to improve  mentally disabled children’s visual perception and awareness towards life and to support their interaction with the environment through the power of photography.

Artist Ayhatun Ateşin stated her views about the organisation as follows: “As EMU Fine Arts Club, we believe that the only way to increase each individual’s awareness and sensitivity towards societal problems is through their involvement in interactive activities in arts. While individuals dealing with any field of culture or arts stay away from social risks, they will gain the skill to give meaning to life through learning in arts. Through the power of arts, we aim to provide the disabled with a context to better express themselves as well as to establish a bridge between them and the society through arts.  Whilst the participants are discovering how to paint, make sculpture or work on other relevant areas of arts, they also learn how to merge artistic skills with artistic thinking. Rector of EMU Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam, all vice rectors, academic and administrative units, the student council, representatives of student clubs and a crowded group of students attended the cortege walk which took place within the framework of the 21st Spring Festival. In line with the theme of this year’s festival which is “Awake and Aware!”, students joined the walk with their hats, badges, colored bracelets, and costumes, all designed to raise public awareness towards social responsibility issues. The Tribal Dance Community from Turkey entertained the public with their colorful performance during the walk.

The project is based on the idea that the solid waste problem may be solved through selective collection and recycling processes. Following the launch of the project, students took their place at the club stands.

The first day of the festival hosted a theatre play entitled ““İstibdat Kumpanyası” by Levent Üzümcü and Sabri Özmener  at Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Center. The Tribal Alternative Dance Community also entertained the audience with a fire dance and pixel poi show. May is a fascinating month for all students at EMU since the Spring Fest organized annually by the Social and Cultural Affairs, Student Clubs, Student Council and the Student Activity Center creates a very relaxing atmosphere full of fun just before the spring term comes to an end.

Student clubs find the opportunity to promote their activities and put performances on stage ranging from acting to dancing, to singing, and the list goes on. The stands opened by students or by the locals attract a lot of people since they sell unique items.

The Spring Festival also hosts music groups, singers, academicians, journalists from abroad and many other cultural and social activities to have the students experience unforgettable moments and get the opportunity to meet diverse characters and enjoy new sensations.

EMU 21st Spring Festival has been scheduled to start from 21st May 2015. Last year the annual event couldn't hold because of an accident tragedy involving EMU students; was reported as shown below:

A tragic event took place in the district of Soma in Turkey where due to an explosion, hundreds of miners have lost their lives. Due to the severity of the accident, Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) and all its members are deeply upset.

Due to the declaration of the mourning period in the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, EMU announces that it would not be appropriate to continue with the spring festival between the 21st and the 24th of May, 2014.

After the meeting between the EMU Student Council as well as EMU student clubs, we have come to the conclusion that it is in the best interest of the university to cancel the 21st EMU spring festival

May God have mercy on those who have lost their lives in the Turkey Soma disaster. We extend our deepest condolences to the relatives of the deceased

The Rectorate

THIS YEARS EVENT promises to be the best...yet. Plans are already underway to involve more International Students event in order to truly reflect the 'international' status of the University.
