The talk, given by Roman Saini is about his journey till now and the way he cracked some of the world’s toughest examinations. He emphasizes on extremely low acceptance ratio in prestigious Indian examinations. Making a mention of the importance of being risk friendly, he then goes on to explain how each one of us has the capability to achieve greatness but we are afraid to take that one step. He believes that luck is a probability and describes how each one of us has equal chances of succeeding at it. His deduction exhibits competence is more impactful than just having confidence. The way we understand our intelligence and abilities deeply impacts our success. Based on social science research and real life examples, Eduardo Briceño articulates how mindset, or the understanding of intelligence and abilities, is key. When students or adults see their abilities as fixed, whether they think they're naturals or just not built for a certain domain, they avoid challenge and lose interest when things get hard. Conversely, when they understand that abilities are developed, they more readily adopt learning-oriented behaviors such as deliberate practice and grit that enable them to achieve their goals. But this belief is itself malleable, and there are clear actions we can all take to establish a growth mindset and enable success for our children, our peers and ourselves.

When he was 24, Arthur Zang invented the Cardiopad, a touch screen tablet that enables electrocardiograms (ECG) to be performed in remote, rural areas. The cardiac signals are transferred through the cell phone network and diagnosed by specialists, who receive the results in less than 30 minutes.

Arthur Zang, a 26-year-old Cameroonian engineer, invented the life-saving Cardiopad. This touch screen medical tablet enables heart examinations such as ECG to be performed in remote locations. The results are transferred wirelessly to specialists so that patients living in rural areas do not have to travel to urban centers for medical examination.

Within the framework of TEDx, Eastern Mediterranean University hosted a conference entitled “Motiva Crea Innova 8” at Mustafa Afşin Ersoy at 5:00 p.m. on 14 November 2014. Main speakers of the event were EMU Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Ahmet Sözen and Girne American University Business and Economics Faculty academic staff member  Assist. Prof. Dr. Lawrence Emeagwali. Other speakers at the TEDx even were EMU Architecture Department PhD student and research assistant Ugo Elinwa, EMU postgraduate student Eiad Alhamed and Polina Turuntaeva from Girne American University.

In his talk entitled “How to Establish Positive Peace in Cyprus”, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Sözen started with the Cyprus conflict which has remained unresolved for more than half a century and talked about the methods that would bring positive peace to Cyprus. Prof. Dr. Sözen put forth that peace is possible in Cyprus and the method of reaching peace should start from the community.

Prof. Dr. Sözen also talked about the importance of being innovative, creating new ideas to contribute to peace and motivating people on these ideas. Prof. Dr. Sözen stated his belief in  blending idealism and pragmatism in contributing to the positive peace in Cyprus.

According to Prof. Dr. Sözen,  a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation is the second preference of both communities and is the only compromised solution model that has the chance to pass from a simultaneous, separate referenda -  which is a procedure agreed upon by both sides in case the two leaders reach an agreement on a settlement.

Prof. Dr. Sözen  added that we need to envisage the search for bringing positive peace to Cyprus more broadly. So, our focus should be a broad one that will include the Cyprus peace process, rather than just the narrowly defined peace negotiations between a handful of persons. According to him, the peace process in Cyprus should be more inclusive.

According to Prof. Dr. Sözen, the implementation of a series of substantive CBMs – confidence building measures – between the two communities in Cyprus would be extremely beneficial in bridging the big gap of trust between the two communities in Cyprus. Prof. Dr. Sözen put forth that positive change should be brought to the lives of the common people so that they can see that cooperation between the two communities is possible.

Prof. Dr. Sözen also provided an array of recommendations for confidence building measures the first of which was establishing a joint commission of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot teachers who will go through the history text books and erase all traces of hatred and racism from the textbooks. The second recommendation was the opening of the fenced area of Varosha under UN administration. The third was opening Ercan airport or the original Nicosia International Airport for direct flight where TCs as well as GCs will be able to fly directly to Turkish cities as well as other European and world destinations. Prof. Dr. Sözen also suggested the establishment of a joint commission with collective decision making mechanism where we can talk about how we’ll make the best use of our natural resources. Among further recommendations of Prof. Dr. Sözen were  building a giant solar power plant in Cyprus where the energy produced can be used by both communities and building a joint university in the buffer zone.

After Prof. Dr. Sözen, Girne American University Business and Economics Faculty academic staff member Assist. Prof. Dr. Lawrence Emeagwali talked about “Sustainable Peace: Is It Really Possible?” Assist. Prof. Dr. Emeagwali stated the importance of avoiding conflicts and perceiving individuals as humans without classifying them. At the end of his speech, Assist. Prof. Dr. Emeagwali amazed the audience with his concluding message “We are One and Noone is Better than Anyone” .

Girne American University student Polina Turuntaeva talked about the place of females in media, how media affects the society by using the gender structure and how females are unaware of the negative effects on their personal development. EMU Architecture Department PhD student Ugo Elinwa gave information about his voluntary involvement in various projects, concerts and courses organised for deprived children in Maraş region. Giving examples on how to integrate them into the community, Elinwa stated that everyone makes mistakes. The important thing is to get up and continue and avoid making the same mistakes. Finally, EMU postgraduate student Eiad Alhamed provided information about personal leadership, awareness, performance and attitudes and stated that “You are the controlling point of your life, you can manage your life and create your own chances”.

Excerpts of the interview with the New Rector Prof. Dr.Necdet Osam on Friday November 7th 2014. Also present is the TEDxEMUniversity Team and Scanty Gela.

1. What plans do you have for International Students currently enrolled at EMU?

Rector: Ofcourse we have to provide all kinds of facilities, features, and advancements for International students, that means we are going to establish more ties with International communities, the best of everything.

2. Some students are worried about the scholarship benefits currently being enjoyed by many and wondering whether your tenure will retain or scrap it?

Rector: Honestly i do not understand where the rumour started. Who is spreading this rumour. Nothing like that happened. This is just, i think, general normal gossip among the students. I had always been a student all my life and always been a recipient of Scholarships.

For instance in 1977, i received a scholarship when i did part of my studies in the United States. Afterwards i received another scholarship in Italy for years. These are all important points so why do we need to cut down the scholarships of students but... there's always a caveat.

Scholarships are important but they are not open ended. This is the point to put into consideration. What does this mean? We are not giving scholarships to our students in order to enjoy life. A student given a scholarship must know that he/she is expected to excel and achieve a certain threshold of success.

3. What would you like your Rectorship to be viewed as, at the end of your 4 years tenure. What would you say you would do or have done to achieve success?

Rector: Success means good communication. Success means to be able to reach every single individual, staff and students in the University. Success is having a certain amount of respect among EMU family and society. Every student should have a chance to meet the Rector of the University. Not only by specific groups or associations. One can book an appointment to discuss anything with the Rector as a student of EMU.

4. Tell us about your family. We would like to know more about you?

Rector:  I lost my father and mother so i don't have any parents. I lost my mother in 2000 and my father 10 years later, in 2010. I have a brother practising Law in the United Kingdom. My wife is a  professor in EMU. She was the Vice Rector of Social Affairs in the last administration. She teaches now at the Faculty of Education. Bit of an Irony i became the Rector and she lost her job hehe. She's a linguist. I have a daughter graduating this year from a Top University in the United Kingdom. She did her major in Applied Psychology. She is very clever like me (laughter). I'm 53 years old and my hobbies include, studying. I love animals. I have 23 cats in my garden. I feed them all the time. My day begins around 6am every morning to take my cats outside and feed them.

I have a big dog and a beautiful Arabian horse for the last 5 years, raised here in Cyprus. My daughter rides the horse for show jumping and it's my hobby to wash and clean the horse too lol. I do a lot of sailing too. When i was in the states, i worked at the shipping yards too, cleaning the boats so i learnt how to sail from there. Even though we were on scholarship then, i had to do extra works so i could make ends meet and take care of my other extra curricular affairs expenses.

Finally i had a time to own a boat so i do sailing whenever the times gives. I used to play tennis when i was much younger but can't any more because of my knees. I do a lot of writing in  my spare time. I wrote a lot of books on the Cyprus issue because i witnessed them first hand. I do have a lot articles published in International Journals worldwide.

I love driving cars. I love washing cars to. The Rector is just a position. It doesnt matter as long as you are a nice person with a good heart and conscience. Human beings are very important for me. This is the reality of the Rector. I am not saying any lie here. That's me your new rector in a nutshell.
