What is a 'fire rainbow?' Hint: it's not a rainbow, and it's not caused by fire

Residents of South Carolina’s Lowcountry witnessed an unusual natural light show on Sunday August 16th. A “fire rainbow” appeared in the sky and drew comparisons to “a multi-colored angel” for about an hour before disappearing, The media in Charleston reported.
Images of the iridescent clouds went viral, but scientists say “fire rainbow” is a misnomer: the phenomenon is not a true rainbow, and it has nothing to do with fire – instead of rain or flame, the phenomenon is caused by ice.
The term “fire rainbow” was apparently coined by a journalist in Spokane, Wash. in 2006. Circumhorizontal arcs – the real, if less catchy, name – can many times be seen during the spring and summer months in middle-latitude locations, the Weather Channel reported, saying that the spectacle looks  “as if wispy cirrus clouds take on a rainbow palette.”

Perhaps the most memorable time a “rainbow” – real or false – went viral was in 2010, when a YouTube video of a “double rainbow” spotted near Yosemite National Park was posted online.

TOO MUCH Hot Weather? Nicosia - TRNC road rage caught on film (VIDEO)

A road rage video uploaded on a local news website was making the rounds on social media earlier this week, that shows two Cypriot drivers coming to blows in a middle-of-the-road punch-up.

The two men are seen rolling in the middle of the road before eventually being pulled apart by a third man and two women, who appeared to have been travelling with them, before returning to their respective vehicles on the outskirts of Nicosia.

There seems to be no indication as to the motive except two frustrated drivers that lost it at the wheel during the summer heat.

The video first appeared on Offsite.

Rainbow Cloud In Costa Rica Triggers 'End Of Times' Panic, But Scientists Have An Explanation

A rare cloud formation last week amazed and stunned people in Costa Rica — they captured and put it on YouTube, where it quickly went on to become an Internet sensation.

The iridescent and multi-colored cloud had at least one person thinking it signaled the end of the world. Of course, it was not a sign of the end times, but rather a phenomenon called cloud iridescence. After a similar event happened in Colorado in 2007, NASA was able to shed some light on the science behind it.

"These clouds are formed of small water droplets of nearly uniform size," says NASA. "When the sun is in the right position and mostly hidden by thick clouds, these thinner clouds significantly diffract sunlight in a nearly coherent manner, with different colors being deflected by different amounts. Therefore, different colors will come to the observer from slightly different directions."

The recent occurrence was visible in the sky over a number of Costa Rican cities, including San Jose, Parrita, Pavas, Escazu and Hatillo.
........
........

The cloud formation itself is known as a "pileus" or "cap cloud" formation, and meteorologists say when this cloud formation is present, it suggests that a storm is quickly gaining strength. In this particular case, the cloud included ice crystals, which refracted light from the sun.

The best time to spot these clouds is right before a storm, but they don't tend to last very long, and won't generally be as spectacular as the one recently seen in Costa Rica.

A similarly remarkable cloud was however spotted last month in South Carolina that was dubbed the "Fire Rainbow."

At least 12 killed by monster sandstorm in the Mid-East; No deaths in Cyprus [VIDEOS]

Expats in the Middle East and Cyprus say the "horrific" thick cloud has swallowed the mountains and the sea, and made it difficult to see any distance ahead

A blanket of thick black dust has covered Lebanon, Syria, Israel, and Cyprus killing at least eight people.

The choking air is causing respiratory problems and it is believed that more than a thousand have been hospitalised.

Drone footage shows the thick blanket of dust looming over the holiday paradise of Cyprus. [Video below]

The fog hit the Cyprus on Monday 7th September and quickly spread across both sides of the Cyprus island.

Syria's health ministry is advising people to "avoid prolonged exposure to the outdoors" and said hundreds of people had been treated for asthma and other respiratory problems.

Cyprus authorities issued the same advice.

A Meteorological Service official said the deadly dust plume has come from Syria and will swirl across the country at different concentrations.

They said: “A low pressure system from the Iraq area has resulted in bringing the dust from Syria to our region.”

Larnaca, Paphos and Ercan airports are monitoring the situation to see if they may need to ground flights which are currently going ahead as planned.

Mouin Hamzeh, Lebanon's governmental National Council for Scientific Research secretary general, said satellite images "clearly show that the sandstorm came from northern Iraq in the direction of central and northern Lebanon, north and east Syria, and southern Turkey".

He added the sandstorm was denser than usual and some people had taken to wearing masks to protect themselves.

Mum-of-one Nat Haigh, 36, said: "People are calling it horrific. We can usually see the mountains and the sea from our house but with the dust cloud neither are visible.

"It has a very eerie feel to the atmosphere and also there is no insect or bird noise."

The dust has created a mini heatwave with temperatures returning to 41C.

It was previously revealed that the island experienced it hottest ever Summer with the mercury hitting 57C. Schools have been shut in some places.
