Heavy rains cause chaos in Nicosia as more severe weather predicted

Heavy rains have caused flooding in Nicosia yesterday, ‘Star Kibris’ reports. Roads were closed as traffic was brought to a standstill and the basements of some buildings have been flooded. Factories in the Industrial zone were also affected.

Around 300 students were trapped in Levent College Ortaköy yesterday after a nearby stream burst its banks, BRT reports. The students had to wait for hours for the civil defence teams to rescue them as water pouring into the building hampered the operation.

Heavy rains caused havoc all over the capital leading to road closures and leaving cars underwater and buildings flooded. Speaker of the House, Sibel Siber said that a more serious effort was needed to improve the country’s infrastructure.

Meanwhile, The North Cyprus Met Office has issued a new warning about heavy rainfall expected this weekend. According to the latest forecasts, rainy weather will continue until Sunday, ‘Kibris Postasi’ reports.

The met office warned the public to be careful, especially during times of heavy downpour. The police have advised motorists to drive with care.
