The 6th Annual Civil Engineering Week was held by the CIU Department of Civil Engineering
The 6th Annual Civil Engineering Week was held by the Cyprus International University Department of Civil Engineering and the CIU Construction Club. The aim of the event was to contribute to the personal and professional development of students. The week was organized complete with fun activities, field trips, and conferences held by professionals.
The week began with a presentation by METU Lecturer Prof. Melih Yanmaz titled “2010 Güzelyurt Floods and Remedial Measures”.
Türcan Ardalı, who has for many years held various critical posts within the construction sector in foreign countries in addition to teaching positions at various universities, was the next speaker at the conference. Ardalı provided students with information on “Problems that one may possibly encounter post-graduatuation.”
The third day of the CIU Civil Engineering Week was committed to a field trip to the Geçitköy Dam. The students were accompanied by Instructor Burhan Yıldız during their visit to the dam, which constitutes the Northern Cypriot leg of the project to supply water to Northern Cyprus. During the visit the students learnt about the construction stages of the dam, the technical material used during the process of construction, as well as receiving detailed information on the marine relay stage of the project. The students were also able to study the technology employed in this process.
The fourth day of the event consisted of a conference where the title of the conference was “Some Engineering and Thermal Properties of Mortar and Plaster Produced with Pumice Aggregate”. The speaker at this conference was Associate Prof. Khaled Marar from the European University of Lefke
Nearing the end of the eventful week, students of the CIU Department of Civil Engineering visited the Stonite Marble and Brick Factory as well as attended a conference where Assistant Prof. Dr Pınar Akpınar from Near East University discussed “Concrete Durability – A Vital Concept That is Usually Underestimated by Engineers”. On the final day of the week volleyball and basketball tournaments were organized for students.
