Both North and South Cyprus Leaders agree to open two new border crossings, link Electricity and Telephony
Following a four and a half hour meeting last week, the leaders of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities agreed last week to open two new border crossing points and to link electricity grids and mobile telephony.
President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot President Mustafa Akinci agreed to open two new crossings, one in Lefke, in the west, and one in Dherynia, in the east.
United Nations Special Adviser Espen Barth Eide also announced an agreement to link the two sides’ power grids and mobile telephony networks.
The decisions were made during the second meeting between the two leaders as part of reunification talks that resumed on 15th May after the negotiations were stalled for seven months.
In addition to talks on substantive issues, the leaders had agreed to work on confidence building measures that will benefit the two communities.
