Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg is right - Why you should tape over your webcam!

Hackers working for the forces of both good and evil have developed a pretty terrifying ability to sneak into our computers, phones, tablets and other devices. However, while cyber-geniuses may have the electronic weaponry needed to send firewalls crashing down, there’s one very rudimentary anti-spyware appliance that they still can’t overcome: a piece of tape.

This was highlighted recently by the surprising admission by United States FBI Director James Comey that he tapes over the webcam of his personal laptop in order to stop hackers from peeking at him when he’s at home. His comments have sparked a debate over whether or not this type of secrecy is necessary or indeed appropriate.

Yes folks, Zuckerberg tapes over his webcam. The billionaire made the (accidental?) revelation in a Facebook post intended to promote Instagram reaching its latest milestone of half a billion monthly active users.

While Zuckerberg probably does have any number of advanced persistent threats trying to break his digital security, normal people shouldn’t be too complacent either. Installing backdoors on compromised computers is a common way for some hackers to occupy their time.

So should you copy Zuckerberg? Probably. It doesn’t hurt, most of the experts do it, and it could minimise damage – even if it’s just emotional – in the case of a catastrophic hack.
