UN Special Envoy to Cyprus Espen Barth Eide: "Cyprus negotiations are not over yet"

“The game is not over” will be the message UN Special Envoy to Cyprus Espen Barth Eide is expected to convey to the two Cypriot leaders, both North and South Cyprus.

Eide will to return to Cyprus next week to discuss with both leaders how to continue after the breakdown of talks in Switzerland.

According to an unnamed UN source, “The UN will regroup and continue” their efforts. “We need to pick up where we have left off.”

The same source said that “Everybody is behind them.” The break should give both leaders the opportunity to reflect on their achievements so far and to consider how they wish to proceed.

Failure to agree on territorial adjustment brought the Cyprus Summit in Switzerland to a halt on Tuesday November 22, 2016.

However, the UN is still keen on supporting the negotiations since the latest talks have been the most productive that they have been in decades.

“The United States continues to support the Cypriot-led, UN-facilitated efforts of the two leaders to realize the hopes of all Cypriots and bring about a just and lasting settlement.  We are very encouraged by the considerable progress Cypriot leaders have made this year and hope they continue to work to reunify the island as a bi-zonal, bicommunal federation, which would benefit all Cypriots as well as the wider region”, a US embassy spokesperson said.
