Students of EMU Communication and Media Studies Faculty Introduce A Series of Civic Involvement Projects


Within the framework of “Graduation Project” course offered by EMU Communication and Media Studies Faculty (FCMS), Public Relations and Advertising Department academic staff member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anıl Kemal Kaya, students of FCMS carried out a series of social responsibility projects at Regional Anatolian Culture Festival in Famagusta.

Görkem Ergöl, Caner Aksu, Volkan Onmaz and Cansu Tuncay donated funds raised from fruid salad they sold during the festival to Şehit Osman Ahmet Elementary School.

Another similar project was carried out by final year students Ozan Üstüntaş, Gökçe Tahta and Hakan Yaman, who entertained the children with their clown costumes and special face paints at the festival.

As part of another project, Ramazan Aykut Uzun and Bensamin Esther Uduak distributed milk to children under the sponsorship of KOOPSÜT. During the event, Uzun and Esther also provided detailed information on benefits of milk and milk products on health.

CIU Library Club organizes several charitable visitations in TRNC


Continuing their program of compassionate visits, students of the CIU Library Club recently attended the Ece Elderly Care Home, the Pediatric Oncology Service, and the Association for the Orthopedically Handicapped, speaking with residents at all of these institutions.

The venue of the first visit by the CIU Library Club was the Association for Orthopedically Handicapped. The visit formed part of a project entitled “Let’s overcome all Obstacles with Plastic Caps”. Plastic bottle caps were collected at CIU with the aim of supplying wheel-chairs for handicapped individuals and were donated to the association during the visit.


Visiting the Pediatric Oncology Service of Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital, Club members then took part in different games with children and gave gifts to them, putting a smile on their faces.

The final stop of CIU Library Club was the Ece Elderly Care Home, where students spoke and danced with the senior residents.

Cyprus International University [CIU] Tree Festival in Taşkent Plants 265 Saplings


Students from the Cyprus International University Faculty of Education visited the town of Taşkent for a huge tree planting event.

The festival was organized by junior students Sevil Bıyık, Laden Partalcı, Fatma Hilal Çiçek and Esra Dilara Gökdemir, who are studying in CIU’s Department of Pre-School Teacher Education. As a result of their efforts, a plantation with 265 saplings bearing the name of CIU was established in Taşkent.

Students organizing the event as part of their social responsibility project met with authorities from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Department of Forestry in an effort to develop the festival and to obtain saplings.

Having received authorization from the Office of Taşkent Headman, students began work in the vicinity of Taşkent Cemetery for Martyrs. Students cleared the area at regular intervals for three weeks before digging planting holes.

The festival commenced with opening speeches from the Dean for the CIU Faculty of Education, Prof. Servet Özdemir, and the Head of the CIU Department of Pre-School Teacher Education, Asst. Prof. Tuba Gökmenoğlu. Speaking about the event and the project with the theme “Think Local and Think Green for a Greener Island”, Prof. Özdemir and Dr. Gökmenoğlu pointed to the significance of such projects for social responsibility. Following the speeches, coronations were laid on tombstones during a visit to Taşkent’s cemetery for martyrs.


Commencing the planting of trees after the cemetery visit, students were assisted by staff from the Ministry of Environment and the Natural Resources Department of Forestry. Attended by many CIU students from the CIU Pre-School Teacher Education Department as well as other CIU departments, lecturers and staff members, the Tree Planting Festival was a significant contribution to a greener future for the island.

The North Cyprus Wildlife Protection Charity releases 2015 Calendar


Two 2015 calendars have been released by the The North Cyprus Wildlife Protection Charity to help raise funds for birdlife and stray dogs in TRNC.

Stunning shots of North Cyprus birdlife and pin-up portraits of stray dogs are featured in two 2015 calendars this month to raise funds for wildlife and street dog care.

The North Cyprus wildlife protection charity Kuskor offers 14 high quality, glossy photos taken by local photographers and wildlife enthusiasts.

The calendar is in English and Turkish and includes holiday periods for both cultures.

Wildlife photographer and Kuskor member Olkan Erguler said: “The calendar is free to Kuskor members so join now for 25TL and get concessions on bird watching trips too.”

Priced at 10TL for non-members, all funds raised from calendar sales will go towards funding ongoing avian research and field work in the TRNC.

Stray dogs also got a professional make-over for a 2015 calendar, volunteered by photography and architecture academic Mustafa Batibeniz, which has already sold 1,000 copies.

Gazi Magusa-born Mr Batibeniz,28, said:” I did this to support all the people helping strays and all of the 10TL price will go towards feed and improving the shelter.

“It has been so successful that we are reprinting and copies can be ordered by calling me on 0533 877 8320.”

EMU Foreign Languages and English Preparatory School Organised a Charity Event


A charity event was organised within the framework of the community involvement projects organised by the instructors and students of Eastern Mediterranean University Foreign Languages and English Preparatory School during the 2014-2015 Academic Year Fall Semester.

Funds raised from the sales during the event were donated to Kemal Saraçoğlu Foundation for Children with Leukemia by EMU FL & EPS Community Involvement Projects coordinator Mutlu Soykurt and project administrator Hatice Güneş.
