Eastern Mediterranean University, Communication Faculty, organised an event promoting Black Magic cameras for student. During the event which took place at the exhibition hall of EMU Communication and Media Studies Faculty at 11:00 a.m. on 4 November 2015, the representative of Oktotech Firm Sinan Şensivas provided information about the camera and specifications.

Giving detailed information about the cameras, Şensivas also talked about the technical and visual qualities of the said cameras and also shared sample videos recordings.

One of the first graduates of EMU and distributor of Black Magic cameras in Cyprus Berk Özen stated that the event is a special organisation targeted towards EMU Communication and Media Studies Faculty’s students. Expressing his gratitude in visiting EMU, Özen also put forth that those who participated in the promotion will be offered special prices for a week during “Pocket Camera” purchases.

Communication and Media Studies Faculty Acting Dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ümit İnatçı and a crowded group of academic staff members and students attended the event during which participants had a chance to try the said cameras.

Eastern Mediterranean University Communication and Media Studies Faculty, Radio-TV, Cinema and Journalism Department is finalising the preparations for Fone Film Festival taking place between 11 and 12 June 2015.

Taking place under the sponsorship of Turkish Halk Bank, the theme of this year’s festival is “What I Came to Say”. With the view that everyone has a story to tell, 2015 Fone Film Festival will be an opportunity for the participants to tell their story.

Short movies to be shot with mobile digital devices will appear under two distinct categories as high school and +18.

On behalf of the festival organisation committee, Radio-TV,  Film and Journalism Department Chair Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hanife Aliefendioğlu stated that the former film festivals revealed that everyone has a story to tell and the information society and mobile culture we live in offer us various means to tell our stories. Hence, the organising committee specified this year’s theme as ‘What I Came to Say’. All high school students and adults are invited to share their stories telling us about what kind of world we live in or we would like to live in.

As it was during the previous years, the festival will be offering awards to winning works. The award for the best film in the international category has been set as 4000 TL, for the second best film  2500 TL and the third one, 1500 TL. Additionally, the best movie in the high schools category  will be awarded 2000 TL, the second one 1500 TL and the third will receive 1000 TL.

Within the framework of “Graduation Project” course offered by EMU Communication and Media Studies Faculty (FCMS), Public Relations and Advertising Department academic staff member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anıl Kemal Kaya, students of FCMS carried out a series of social responsibility projects at Regional Anatolian Culture Festival in Famagusta.

Görkem Ergöl, Caner Aksu, Volkan Onmaz and Cansu Tuncay donated funds raised from fruid salad they sold during the festival to Şehit Osman Ahmet Elementary School.

Another similar project was carried out by final year students Ozan Üstüntaş, Gökçe Tahta and Hakan Yaman, who entertained the children with their clown costumes and special face paints at the festival.

As part of another project, Ramazan Aykut Uzun and Bensamin Esther Uduak distributed milk to children under the sponsorship of KOOPSÜT. During the event, Uzun and Esther also provided detailed information on benefits of milk and milk products on health.

Within the framework of 2015 Communication Days organised by Eastern Mediterranean University Communication and Media Studies Faculty, editör of ‘Direnişteyiz’ online news site İlknur Kavlak delivered a presentation entitled “Media as a Means of Resistance and Support, Not as an Alternative”. Starting her presentation with her criticisms on mainstream media, Kavlak discussed the question “What kind of media or reporting do we need?”.

Continuing her presentation with a video screening explaining how ‘Direnişteyiz’ emerged as an online media tool, Kavlak put forth that  former ‘Gezi Resistance’ has a major role in the emerging of the online news site “Direnişteyiz”. Kavlak added that their site “www.direnisteyiz.net” is the product of a group of volunteers and aims to provide the public with reliable and healthy news flow.

Kavlak stated that the terms “Alternative media” or “citizen journalism” define their operations and added that their aim is to fight against darkness created by the current media and, at the same time, to provide alternative media channels for the opressed.

Kavlak also highlighted the effects of media on the society. Stating that the current system is capitalist imperialism, Kavlak added that monopoly has contributed largely to the enlargement of media, which brought social insensitivity, insecurity and self-interest, all contributing to inequality and exploitation within the society. Kavlak also talked about the methods of news servicing in Turkey and around the world.

At the end of her presentation Kavlak read the following extract from Paulo Freire’s ‘Pedagogy of the Oppressed’: “The word is more than just an instrument which makes dialogue possible; accordingly, we must seek its constitutive elements. Within the word we find two dimensions, reflection and action, in such radical interaction that if one is sacrificed—even in part—the other immediately suffers. There is no true word that is not at the same time a praxis. Thus, to speak a true word is to transform the world.”

Eastern Mediterranean University Communication and Media Studies Faculty hosted important internet journalists in a talk event entitled “Online Journalism” taking place under the moderatorship of experienced journalist Zeynel Lüle. T24 online newspaper’s Editor in Chief Doğan Akın, Cumhuriyet Daily online version’s Editor in Chief Oğuz Güven and Diken.com.tr online news site’s Editor in Chief and EMU Communication and Media Studies Faculty’s academic staff member Erdal Güven discussed various aspects of internet journalism during the event.

The first speaker in the panel Oğuz Güven stated that there is no such thing as internet journalism since journalism is journalism. Güven stressed the fact that internet journalism creates possibilities for rapid news share as well as an interactive relationship with the reader. Güven  said “Think of a news item about an accident. Internet enables us to share the news and photos through twitter. Almost everyone has a mobile phone and they share the news rapidly.”

Güven added that internet journalism is a non-stop process which requires the journalist to work 24/7. Güven also put forth that there is still some resistance towards internet journalism in newspaper’s script writing units.

After Güven, T24’s Editor in Chief Doğan Akın stated that we are at the end of the digital beginning. Akın added that journalists perceive journalism as a costly job which should be supported by investors. Akın stated that this could be overcome through internet. Putting forth that if there was no internet, there would be no room for competition, Akın  said that ‘for the first time, we believe that independent journalism may be institutitionalised in Turkey’.  Akın added that the most important distinguishing quality of journalism is being interesting but the pursuit for being interesting cannot be fulfilled properly.

Diken.com.tr internet site’s Editor in Chief and Eastern Mediterranean University Faculty of Communication and Media Studies academic staff member Erdal Güven stated that he is living the second spring in his profession since they have the independence to express themselves freely on the internet. Güven also added that in internet journalism the relationship between speed and quality is reverse as rapidly published news items lack quality.

Designed by Eastern Mediterranean University, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design Department, “Battle Ghazi”, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ first computer game will be launched at Nicosia Golden Tulip Hotel at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, 10 April 2015.   

EMU Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design Department chair Assoc. Prof. Dr. Senih Çavuşoğlu stated that in line with the fast developments in informatics technology during the recent years, smart phones are being used in every aspect of our lives. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Senih Çavuşoğlu also added that the use of digital games has become a popular past time activity for a considerable number of individuals worldwide.

“Battle Ghazi”, the first product of EMU Visual Arts and Visual Communication Department’s “Cartoon and Game Design Studio” brought into life in line with the department’s interdisciplinary and product-oriented design philosophy, will be introduced to the public on 10 April 2015 at the aforesaid venue. EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam, faculty and department officials and a team of 12 game designers will attend the event and provide detailed information about the game.

TRIBUTE BY Allan Langdale

Dear Friends from North Cyprus and Beyond: It is with a very heavy heart that I let you all know of the passing of Dr. Wilbert (‘Skip’) Norman. Skip had been struggling with cancer for some years, beating it back once but suffering a relapse last year. For all of his students at EMU, and all of his friends and colleagues on Cyprus and in other places, I know I speak for them all when I say that Skip was an extraordinary man, creative and generous of heart, and a devoted and excellent teacher. Skip was dedicated to documenting, in both photography and film, the lives of the ordinary people of the Karpas peninsula on Cyprus. I know he had many friends there.

His photography graced many scholarly articles and, even in his eighties, he was working on a film project to compliment his documentary ‘Anatomy of a Dig’ on the archaeological excavations at the Bronze Age Kral Tepesi (King’s Mountain), near Kaleburnu/Galinoporni. He also did amazing photographs of the famous bronze hoard found there.

Skip was one of the most remarkable and kindest people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. We used to live in the same apartment building out near Salamis north of Famagusta. We’d go on drives and take pictures together. He had his favorite eateries in Famagusta and it was always fun dining with him, as he was a wonderful conversationalist and had a great sense of humour. I last saw Skip in Washington DC about four years ago. We had lunch in a Lebanese fast food joint. But it might as well have been the world’s best Parisian restaurant, so delighful was the company.

Two years ago I was hitch hiking in north Cyprus and a young man picked me up. We talked for a while and he told me he’d studied Communications at EMU. I asked him if he knew Professor Norman. His face lit up and he said, “The most wonderful teacher in the world!” I’m happy I told Skip that story. I think everyone who met him felt enriched by having had the experience. He loved people, and he was much loved by all of us. I was just called by one of his cousins ten minutes ago and she thought Facebook would be a good way to get the news to everyone in Cyprus. I know it will be a day of mourning there, as it is here.

Skip worked up to the last. He had just got a new teaching job and was ready, as always, to step into a new challenge. He had a new website up, which you can visit to see some of his photo galleries and his film work, at:

Eastern Mediterranean University, in collaboration with Famagusta Municipality, organised another social responsibility project under the tile of “Clothes Aid”.

Students of EMU Communication Faculty placed big boxes at various places of Famagusta for clothes donations and, at the same time, collected brand new clothes from different sponsors. With Famagusta Municipality’s support, the students were able to collect clothes for those in need from the Famagusta community as well as  various shops named La Chance, Jadora, Moda City and Cartoon. Clothes donated within the framework of the organisation were taken to 15 different families in need with a minibus from Famagusta Municipality.

The social responsibility project set a good example for things that can be achieved for the benefit of the society through joint organisations as such.

Within the framework of the course entitled “Marketing for Social Responsibility” delivered by Communication Faculty academic staff member Umut Ayman, social responsibility projects are being carried out within the operations of Eastern Mediterranean University Community Involvement Center. Members of EMU Communication Faculty once again demonstrated their awareness towards social problems through the organisation of the following events.

The first project was carried out by EMU Communication Faculty, Public Relations and Advertising students Gbolahan Adegboyega Ishola and Chijioke Emmanuel Nwani, who delivered toys and presents to children residing in SOS Children’s Village. The toys and presents were bought by funds raised by selling clothes belonging to African brand Villar Fashion, the main sponsor of the organisation. Students delivered the toys and presents to Tangül Meral from SOS Children’s Village.

Organised by EMU Communication Faculty, Public Relations and Advertising Department students Hakan Yaman, Kıvanç Cömert, Mehmet Güven Gülgül, Nihan Çetin and İfedayo İbrahim,  the second project was a charity event taking place at Cafe Inn in Famagusta. Funds raised during the organisation were donated to the Orphanage Foundation and Çağlayan Orphanage.

Lastly, two groups of students from EMU Communication Faculty, Public Relations and Advertising Department organised a social responsibility event for orphans. While Mücahit Pehlivan, Fehmi Cengiz, Gizem Bekçi, Melis Karadağ and Rava Agan organised entertaining activities for the children at SOS Children’s Village, students of the second group Erşen Amcaoğlu, Enver Gilanlıoğlu and Haney Öykü Tatar organised colorful activities for the residents of  Çağlayan Orphanage. During their visit, students of EMU danced and sang with the children and offered them cakes and other savouries.

Eastern Mediterranean University Communication Faculty organized a certificate awarding ceremony for students who demonstrated outstanding success during the 2013-2014 Academic Year Spring Semester. EMU Communication Faculty’s academic staff members and students attended the ceremony where a total of 88 students were awarded high honor and 86 students honor certificates. During his opening address, Communication Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan congratulated students for their remarkable achievement and wished them all the further success.

In his opening address, Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan put forth that the faculty boasts a student population from 43 different countries. Stating that their faculty is undoubtedly the best communication faculty within the TRNC, Prof. Dr. İrvan said that each and every member of the faculty has been working with utmost devotion to place the faculty amongst the bests at the international arena.

Giving information about the faculty’s accreditation process with the American Communication Association, Prof. Dr. İrvan stated that the faculty underwent the inspection of three representatives of ACA, who visited the faculty in November, 2014. Stating that the faculty expects to receive the accreditation of ACA for all undergraduate and postgraduate programs, Prof. İrvan put forth that the receival of the accreditation will make their faculty the first faculty accredited at international level both throughout Cyprus and Turkey.

Stating that EMU Communication Faculty’s postgraduate programs have been ranked within the best 200 communication faculties by Eduniversal for the past three years,  Prof. Dr. İrvan put forth that they take pride in this success at international level.

During the certificate ceremony,  Onur Konağ, who delivered a speech on behalf of Radio, Television, Cinema and Journalism Department, stated that the students are extemely happy  with the warm environment provided by the faculty.

Konstantin Batdinov, who delivered a speech on behalf of Public Relations and Advertising Department students, stated that it was the members of EMU Communication Faculty who helped him discover his inner potential.

Antoun Alhawini, who talked on behalf of Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design students, put forth that he sees the faculty as his home and the faculty members as his family.

Eastern Mediterranean University Communication Faculty Journalism Program student Sertaç Özdemir came the second in Aydın Doğan Foundation Young Communication Majors Competition.

The award ceremony of the Aydın Doğan Foundation’s Young Communication Majors Competition, which has the aim of contributing to the education of qualified media professionals, took place at Bahçeşehir University. A total of 1351 students, 1057 projects and 33 universities took part in the competition in printed, visual, auditory, advertising, public relations and internet publishing branches. Following various boards’ evaluations, 64 projects of 113 students from 19 universities qualified for the award.  

During his opening address at Aydın Doğan Foundation awards ceremony, chair of the foundation Hanzade Doğan Boyner stated that through the competition, communications students at different universities have a chance to get to know each other and demonstrate others how to put theory into practice. Following the opening adress, awards for the first three places were distributed.

It is worth mentioning that Eastern Mediterranean University Communication Faculty is the only faculty taking part in the competition from the TRNC. With his work entitled “Soma: We will Never Forget”, Sertaç Özdemir was awarded the second place. EMU Communication Faculty Vice Dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nurten Kara, Radio, Television, Cinema and Journalism Department academic staff member Assist. Prof. Dr. Metin Ersoy and Gündem Newspaper editor and research assistant  Ayça Atay accompanied Özdemir in the awards ceremony. Stating his happiness in receiving the award, Sertaç Özdemir put forth that the feeling of responsibility he had during the Soma Disaster search and rescue operation urged him to express his feelings through photography, script and graphics.

EMU Communication Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan stated that Aydın Doğan Foundation Young Communication Majors Competition is considered as the Oscars of communication students. Congratulating Özdemir on his outstanding success, Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan expressed the faculty’s pride and happiness in bringing up students as such.

Eastern Mediterranean University Communication Faculty highlighted World Human Rights Day through a series of activities organised in collaboration with the Department of Radio, Television, Cinema and Journalish and Community Involvement Center.

The activities which aimed to raise awareness regarding the universal human rights commenced with a tree decoration and collage activity during which faculty research assistant Engin Aluç sang songs and played the guitar. EMU Communication Faculty Kazakh students Gulsaya Kaisagaliyeva and Raziya Assylgozina, gave a presentation entitled “Female Rights in Kazakhstan”.

Within the framework of the day, two talk sessions took place. Osmangazi University Architecture Faculty academic staff member Assist. Prof. Dr. Levent Şentürk talked about, “Thought and Site” and  Tegiye Birey  from Refugee Rights Association gave a presentation entitled “What Would You Do If It Was You?”.

The activities ended with famous photography artist and academic staff member İsmail Gökçe’s studio activity entitled “Define Your Own Rights”.

Eduniversal, a global ranking and rating agency specializing in higher education, included Eastern Mediterranean University Communication Faculty’s Communication and Media Studies Postgraduate Program (thesis) within the best 200 programs during the 2013-2014 academic year.

EMU Communication Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan expressed the faculty’s pride and happiness in having a postgraduate program appearing among the bests for the past three years. Stating that Eduniversal specifies the quality of the postgraduate programs in 31 different fields, Prof. İrvan put forth that only 5 programs in the field of communication, one of which was Eastern Mediterranean University Communication Faculty’s Communication and Media Studies Postgraduate Program, were included in the list from Euroasia and Middle East regions.

Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan stated that the aforesaid program which started admitting students in 1998 has produced a total of 133 graduates some of whom hold academic positions at different universities upon the completion of their PhD studies.

Stating that currently the aforesaid postgraduate program boasts 44 registered students from Turkey, TRNC, Iran, Nigeria, Azerbaijan, Palestine, Jordan, Zimbabwe, and Cameroon,  Prof. Dr. İrvan  put forth that EMU Communication Faculty is lucky to have such a multicultural and rich student profile.

Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan also provided information on the current accreditation projects of the faculty with a special focus on the American Communication Association (ACA) accreditation. Stating that the accreditation process in EMU Communication Faculty both includes the undergraduate and postgraduate programs, Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan explained that along with Communication and Media Studies (thesis) Postgraduate Program, Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design (non-thesis) Postgraduate Program and Digital Media and Film (non-thesis) postgraduate programs have also been included in the accreditation process.

Eastern Mediterranean University Communication Faculty is undergoing the international accreditation of the American Communication Association (ACA).

A team of three accreditation committee members from ACA visited EMU Communication Faculty last week to conduct some observations and evaluations. Within the framework of the visit, ACA accredition committee members Prof. Dr. Philip Jeffrey Auter, Prof. Dr. Peter Antony De Caro and Prof. Dr. James Lawson Parker met the administrative staff of the faculty as well as the students, observed classes and technical possibilities of the faculty and took part in various meetings. ACA accreditation is granted following an evaluation of the undergraduate and postgraduate programs in line with set criteria consisting of 14 items.

Providing information about the accreditation process, EMU Communication Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan stated that their faculty is the first communication faculty within TRNC and Turkey undergoing accreditation process as such. Stating that the accreditation process is a long and difficult process, Prof. Dr. İrvan put forth that they have been working on ACA accreditation for more than one year.  Prof. Dr. İrvan stated that the faculty’s accreditation committee produced an evaluation report certifying that the faculty provides education suitable with ACA’s standards. Following their evaluation of the report, ACA accreditation committee found it sufficient and devided to visit the faculty. During the past week, the committee almost met everyone within the faculty, took notes, observed classes, held meetings, visited the university library and EMU TV studios and had a meeting with the Director of the Computer Center. Stating that it will take some time for the committee to prepare their report on the accreditation, Prof. Dr. İrvan added that in the meantime the faculty will continue to develop.

After a meeting with the accreditation committee, EMU Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Ahmet Sözen stated the importance of accreditations for Eastern Mediterranean University as the accreditations are not only vital in terms of quality but also important for overcoming embargoes applied on the country. Putting forth that a considerable number of faculties have received the accreditation of an array of prominent organisations, Prof. Sözen stated that further accreditations will be achieved in the meantime.

During their stay in TRNC, ACA committee members also had a chance to meet the Turkish Cypriot media representatives. Havadis Newspaper General Director and Editor in Chief Başaran Düzgün, Kanal Sim Director Sami Özuslu, Detay Newspaper Editor in Chief Oshan Sabırlı and Genç TV Editor in Chief Nazar Erişkin attended the meeting which took place at EMU Communication Faculty. During the meeting the structure and problems of Cyprus Turkish media, the relationship between EMU Communication Faculty and other media organs, internship opportunities for students, and specialising in media were discussed.

Chair of the accreditation committee Prof. Dr. Phil Auter thanked EMU for making them feel at home as well as providing them with a unique experience. Stating his pleasure in observing the  harmonious working environment among the faculty staff, Prof. Dr. Auter put forth that the university provides education at professional standards. Prof. Dr. Auter said that the final decision regarding the accreditation will be given by ACA Executive Board and added that ACA looks forward to work in collaboration with EMU regarding further projects.

Within the framework of the accreditation process, ACA Accreditation committee members Prof. Dr. Philip Jeffrey Auter, Prof. Dr. Peter Antony De Caro and Prof. Dr. James Lawson Parker and EMU Communication Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan, Journalism, Radio, Television and Cinema Department chair Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hanife Aliefendioğlu and Communication Faculty academic staff member Assist. Prof. Dr. Pembe Behçetoğulları visited Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Ahmet Sözen in his office.

Stressing the importance of accreditations for EMU, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Sözen stated the vital role of accreditations in terms of quality and fighting against the embargoes.  Putting forth that a considerable number of programs within EMU have received various international accreditations, Prof. Sözen also added that upon the completion of the accreditation process, the quality of education in EMU will be confirmed.

During the visit, members of the accreditation committee gave information on the accreditation process to be followed. The committee stated that following their visit, they will finish their report about EMU within a week and a decision will be taken in accordance with the report.

Her mother has moved to the States with a new man and Lilya is waiting to be sent for. When no letters or money arrive from her mother, it becomes obvious that Lilya has been abandoned. She's forced to move into a tiny, run-down flat with no electricity or heating. Heartbroken and without money, Lilya's situation becomes desperate. Her only friend is the 11 year-old boy Volodya, who sometimes is allowed to sleep on her sofa. They hang around together and fantasize to make life a little easier. One day, hope arrives when Lilya falls in love with Andrei. He asks her to follow him to Sweden to start a new life. Little Volodya is jealous and suspicious -- but Lilya packs her things. Suddenly she´s sitting on a plane bound for Sweden not knowing what will happen next.

EMU successfully hosted the ‘4th International Conference in Communication and Media Studies’ organised by Eastern Mediterranean University Communication Faculty, Center for Research and Communication for Peace. Hosting a total of 17 sessions and 60 presentations, the conference took place at Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Center under the heading “If You Wish Peace, Care for Justice”.

Chair of the Center for Research and Communication for Peace Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuğrul İlter stated that during the conference, they had a chance to exchange information with international academicians who possess different experiences and perspectives. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuğrul İlter also added that the conference provided a platform for civil community activists to express the problems they encounter.

The keynote speaker of the conference Prof. Dr. Oliver Richmond stated his pleasure in taking part in such a meaningful event and put forth that the conference reminded everyone that more research should be conducted to achieve peace.

Dean of EMU Communication Faculty Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan expressed his pride, on behalf of his faculty,  in carrying out such an event which yielded positive outcomes.
