UPDATED!!: North Cyprus issues warning over Ebola outbreak

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has informed its citizens of certain precautions they should take to protect themselves from an outbreak of Ebola in western Africa, which threatens to spread to different parts of the world.

Officials from the TRNC's Health Ministry metr with experts the Infection Control Committee and the Near-East University to discuss the threat of Ebola in the country and possible ways to prevent it from spreading.

Acknowledging the warnings issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) about the viruses 'uncontrollable' spread since the Health Ministry's last statement regarding Ebola two months ago, the Ministry stated that the disease has been proven to be passed down from both humans and animals. It declared that the virus can also be contracted via the consumption of infected meat.

The Ministry added that unprotected intercourse with those who recently overcame the virus was risky and that the virus was most likely to be spread to another person within 2-21 days of contracting it.

Reassuring that the risk of getting infected is low so long as the precautions are taken, the Health Ministry informed that the chances are those who are likely to go to or come back from affected regions in western Africa are those who come to the TRNC to work or for educational purposes, but at the same time pointed out that not all individuals from the African continent are potential carriers.

However, the Ministry warned all TRNC citizens to avoid all unnecessary travel to the affected regions, adding that all travelers in and out of the TRNC would be provided information about Ebola at airports, ports and border crossings.

Although there have been no reported cases of Ebola in the TRNC, the Health Ministry also said that it would meet on a weekly basis to discuss Ebola in order to evaluate developments and inform the public of them.

Located in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, the Island of Cyprus is geographically close to the northern African coast of Egypt, which has like many African countries also set up precautions against Ebola.

The TRNC also hosts a large number of workers and students from Nigeria and Ghana, two western African countries that have been gripped by the outbreak along with Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
