TRNC hit as weather turns wintery and snowy and more icy conditions predicted [KYRENIA]

Thunderstorms, heavy rain and hail stones swept across Kyrenia on Tuesday morning, as winter made its presence felt. Residents in villages around Kyrenia, reported poor driving conditions during the morning and some flooding on the roads.

Kyrenia police spokesman said that fortunately no major incidents had been reported although he confirmed that the heavy rain and hail caused some problems to a number of roads.

“Due to the huge amounts of water there was some flooding on the road and debris, such as small stones was also washed onto the road,” he said. In addition, some roads in villages were flooded and for a short period cars were finding it hard to pass, he said.

“As always, we are urging people to drive with caution and care and keep speeds low. Roads are slippery and driving conditions during the winter months can be hazardous.”

On Monday, the meteorological services said they expected rain and stormy weather on coastal areas during Tuesday and Wednesday, while they also predicted snow in the Troodos area over the next couple of days. Light snow flurries are also predicted for Wednesday.

Temperatures have fallen by around three degrees Celsius in central areas and around five to six in the  mountains.

It is due to become slightly warmer on Thursday morning with clouds gathering and the possibility of scattered thunder storms in some areas later on in the day.
