Officials from Girne American University are in Zimbabwe to assess prospects of building their African campus in the southern African country.

Girne American University General Secretary Dr Sualp Davut arrived in the country last weekend and was later met with officials from the Zimbabwean Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development.

IN HIS WORDS; “One of our top priorities in Zimbabwe is to share our plans to establish a campus in Africa and the country is a top priority for our investment drive.

“Zimbabwe is a priority country for our investment plans as we have campuses across the world under our franchising arrangements and we are now looking at Africa as our next investment destination,” Dr Davut said.

GAU presently has campuses in Turkey, Kent; United Kingdom, Washington DC, Hong Kong and Moldova.

“From that outlook, the university has campuses on five continents and the next target is Africa and we are strongly looking at the opportunity of establishing the African campus in Zimbabwe,” Dr Davut said.

Girne American University was founded in 1985 and has grown from its small beginnings to being a very strong university with more than 15,000 students.

The university is continuously expanding its partnerships, programs and campuses abroad. The tertiary institution is also targeting Zimbabwean students for its next academic year on 50 percent scholarship.

Dr Davut said Zimbabwean students would also gets extra scholarships, including an extra 50 percent scholarship for high academic grades, 50 percent extra scholarship for assistant-ship or a further 50 percent for students in sport teams.

“We have so many Zimbabwean students and we would want to have more since they have proved to be intelligent, peaceful and above all very hardworking.

“Zimbabwean students have actually helped us in the university being accorded high standards and we have raked high up there because of the students that have come from Zimbabwe.”

Girne American University (GAU), while moving toward its 50th year in higher education, continues their sports activities without slowing down, besides the academic and social activities.

Streetball event, which is organized by GAU Multi Cultural Center (MCC) annually, also witnessed too many nice events this year. International students showed great interest to the basketball tournament held in GAU Campus sports facilities. In the tournament, where contentious minutes were experienced, students had fun to the fullest, while fighting fiercely for wins

What is Streetball?

Streetball (street basketball) is a type of basketball played on outdoors, among teams consisting of a total of four players, one spare and three in the field. The play, which was formalized with the name FIBA 3x3 by FIBA, is played on a half-court and with one basket. In the game, which consists of two periods of 5 minutes, the team reaching 33 points wins the match. If both of the teams can`t score 33 points in 10 minutes, the team which scored a greater number wins the match. If equality between the teams happens at the end of the normal time, 2 minute overtime period is played.

GAU is continuing to organize culture and tourism activities for their students. The GAU students, who participated in Morphou Culture Tour that was undertaken last weekend, had a chance to attend in 4 different activities at once.

In a statement that was made available from the Girne American University Directorate of  Student Services, it was expressed that:

"The students went to Morphou from Kyrenia with a private shuttle and first they visited the Blue House and got information from relevant personnel.

The second stop of the culture tour was Icon Museum. While students were wandering the museum, they looked admiringly at the works that were carried for centuries to today.

Afterwards the students visited the Morphou Archeology and Nature Museum and finally they completed the day with watching GAU Çetinkaya-Famagusta - Türk Gücü..

The students said that they were well pleased by Girne American University’s Culture Tour, they wanted to see Cyprus’ other regions, especially the wanted to see Karpaz.

According to a press statement released by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of University of Kyrenia, the groundbreaking ceremony of Hospital of University of Kyrenia and Faculty of Medicine, and opening ceremonies of new faculty buildings of Faculty of Maritime Studies and Faculty of Aviation and Space Sciences will be realized on the campus of University of Kyrenia on 15 November 2015, at 15:00. It is stated in the press info that the complex of Hospital of University of Kyrenia and Faculty of Medicine is projected to be completed within one year and become ready for education by the beginning of 2016-2017 academic year.

It is also stated that the Hospital of University of Kyrenia and Faculty of Medicine, which will be established with support of extensive knowledge and experience of Hospital of Near East University and Faculty of Medicine of Near East University, will provide every sort of contemporary equipment and technological infrastructure to conduct all sort of education and research facilities.

The Hospital of University of Kyrenia and Faculty of Medicine of University of Kyrenia, of which the groundbreaking ceremony will be actualized by Prime Minister Ömer Kalyoncu on 15th November and be completed within one year, will be in service in September 2016.

The Faculty of Medicine and the Hospital of University of Kyrenia will be established in accordance with the international criteria and medical criteria, and the Hospital will have a capacity of 150 beds. The Hospital will consist of the departments of Emergency Medicine, Forensic Medicine, Pediatrics, Dermatology and Venereology, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, Internal Medicine, Thoracic Diseases, Cardiology, Neurology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiology, Psychiatry, Sports Medicine, Medical Genetics, Anesthesiology and Reanimation, Neurosurgery, Pediatric Surgery, General Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Cardiovascular Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Otorhinolaryngology, Orthopedics and Traumatology, Medical Pathology, Urology, Orthodontics, Nutrition and Dietetics and latest technology equipped Check-up Center, Blood Bank, laboratories, operating rooms and Hemodialysis Unit.
