Nicosia conference debates risks of Turkey’s nuclear power plant.

A conference titled “Nuclear Plants and Their Effects” which took place last month in Nicosia, concluded that Cyprus would be affected by the nuclear power station being constructed in Akkuyu, Mersin district.

At the meeting it was declared that in the event of an accident at the power plant, Cyprus would suffer environmental damage. It added that even during the routine operation of the plant, there would be environmental and health hazards for Cyprus.

Citing a study conducted by the Turkish Chamber of Architects and Engineers (TMMOB) which assessed potential risks of the nuclear power station, Cyprus would be the first place to be affected during routine operations at the plant and in the event of radiation fallout caused by an accident.

During the conference, the projected potential risks from Akkuyu, based on the Environmental Impact Assessment Report (ÇED), its effects on public health, and history of the anti-nuclear struggle in Turkey and in the world were also discussed.
