Turkish men don skirts in protest against victimisation of women

A group of men went to Istanbul’s iconic Taksim Square wearing skirts, honouring a pledge that they have been making for the past few days on social media.

On 17th February, Erkan Doğan put on a skirt in Istanbul’s Asian side district of Kadıköy in memory of the brutally murdered 20-year-old student Özgecan Aslan.

His action inspired social media calls for a massive “skirt-wearing” march over the weekend to show Turkish men’s support for women who have been victimised by the recent wave of male violence in Turkey.

The burned body of Aslan was discovered on 13th February in a riverbed in the southern Turkish province of Mersin, triggering a public debate in which a women’s supposedly “provocative” attire has been cited as a reason for sexual assault and harassment by several conservative critics.

Timeline:

*Ozgecan Aslan, 20, was found burned in woodland near Tarsus in Turkey
*Student allegedly resisted a sexual assault by a bus driver and was killed
*Her death has outraged people in Turkey
*Thousands have staged days of protests following Miss Aslan's murder
*Men from Azerbaijan have now joined the campaign, posing in miniskirts
*They have posted pictures on Twitter calling for other people to do same
