Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Reveals How He Hire New Employees.
The 30-year-old billionaire said he ask himself of one question before he hire a prospective employee.
Zuckerberg told an audience at the Mobile World Congress this week, “I will only hire someone to work directly for me if I would work for that person. It’s a pretty good test and I think this rule has served me well.”
One of those people who passed the test was clearly Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg.
When asked by a woman in the audience what it is like to work with Sandberg, Zuckerberg said he considered her a mentor and someone who has been instrumental in building Facebook into a business and “healthy organization.”
Zuckerberg also said that part of the social media company’s success is the number of staff the company has. He said, “The most important thing is to keep your team as small as possible.”
Facebook’s staff is relatively small in comparison to other tech giants in Silicon Valley, such as Google, which has almost 55,000 employees.
Zuckerberg said Facebook serves more than a billion people around the world but his team has fewer than 10,000 people and it is only possible because of modern technology.
Zuckerberg was in Barcelona for the Mobile World Congress, the world’s biggest wireless phone fair.
He also spoke about his Internet.org initiative in developing countries, saying more than 7 million people have benefited from the project since it was first announced more than a year ago.
Earlier this week, Zuckerberg was forced to depend himself on complaints that Facebook was getting a free ride out of telecom operators who host its service on smartphones.
Telecom executives have complained that some Internet services’ smartphone applications generate revenue while it is the telephone companies that are forced to invest in the networks that host them.
