Turkish Cypriots need security guarantees: President Dervis Eroglu
President Dervis Eroglu has said that the Turkish Cypriot people would need security guarantees in the event of re-unification.
Eroglu who was speaking to journalists said that his vision was of a realistic, reasonable, and peaceful solution to the 41-year division of Cyprus.
“Underlying our vision for the settlement of the Cyprus issue is the unconditional need to build a future partnership on strong foundations and the attainment of concrete and, in case of need, enforceable security guarantees for the well-being of the Turkish Cypriot people,” he said.
“The continuation of effective and enforceable guarantees that can protect the Turkish Cypriot community from racial prejudices and ethnic discrimination even under the worst possible conditions of economic and political crisis is a part and parcel of our vision,” he added.
Referring to the hydrocarbons issue, Eroglu said:
“Hydrocarbon resources around the island of Cyprus are the common wealth of the two communities living on the island. It must be well understood that we are determined to protect our legitimate rights over the said hydrocarbon reserves.” he said.
Meanwhile, President Anastasiades has said that the government continues with sincerity, determination and boldness its efforts for a settlement to the Cyprus problem.
He stressed the need for a peaceful settlement that will allow the establishment of a modern European state and will give both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots the opportunity to co-exist on the island.
