Finally, Girne’s public parks are being renovated after years of neglect.

Girne’s public parks are being renovated after years of neglect. Five of the district’s 20 parks have already undergone repair, planting and maintenance – and Değirmentaşı Park, which is still being renovated, is the first that is suitable for disabled children, thanks to specially designed play equipment including swings and ramps.

The Municipal Parks and Recreation Department is also working on Zeytinlik Park and has completed major projects at Ozanköy, Karaoğlanoğlu and Kız İzci parks, while a new playground has been created in the Kubbeli Çeşme Street, Karakum, park.

Girne Mayor Nadai Güngördü said that although there were 20 parks in the district, the number in good condition “was very low” before renovation programme.

Drawing attention towards the importance of such play areas for the development of children, he added: “People with disabilities who are part of our community should also be able to benefit from municipal services and children with disabilities can now benefit from the Değirmentaşı Park which provides them with a chance to socialise and play along with others.”
