The ‘white jasmine’ certificates, flags and stickers will be awarded to businesses that score at least 70 points out of a 100 according to their “quality criteria”.

The scheme will operate on a voluntary basis with priority being given to establishments serving food. “Hygiene is not the only criteria, consideration will also be given to facilities for disabled people,” Mr Harmancı said.

Proprietors wanting to take part can apply online via www.beyazyasemin.com for a fee of 50TL, after which their application will be assessed by a special “evaluation commission”.

The certificates and flags will be valid for six months and to earn a renewal, establishments will have to reapply and be reassessed.
