‘Cyprus during the Ottoman Period’ Symposium was held as a result of cooperation between Near East University (NEU) and Municipality of Istanbul Bağcılar
Cyprus during the Ottoman Period symposium was held at the NEU Grand Library. A high number of participants attended.
According to the press info release by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, renowned academicians from universities of 8 different countries, historians, journalists and writers shared their knowledge, perspectives and views regrading ‘Cyprus during the Ottoman Period’.
The opening speech of the symposium was made by Mayor of Istanbul Bağcılar Municipality; Lokman Çağırıcı who expressed how pleased they were to be conducting this symposium in the TRNC. Science during the Ottoman period, religious and social life statuses, cultural and economic structures were examined closely.
Çağırıcı noted that the Ottomans had sovereignty over the island for as long as 307 years and during that time harmony and stability reined. The Ottomans reopened Catholic places of worship and Greek Cypriots had rights of say for the first time and the right to self-administration. Pointing to the water pipeline project now, Cagirici said that the project carried importance for both the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots.
