Head of the Cyprus International University (CIU) Department of Civil Engineering Assistant Prof. Dr. Ayşe Pekrioğlu Balkıs underlined that students were provided with significant privileges when enrolled in graduate and doctoral programs of the Department which is continuously evolving, renewed, and equipped with laboratories of latest technology.

Students studying in graduate programs at the CIU Engineering Faculty Department of Civil Engineering are profiting from the opportunity of undertaking research using latest technology equipment in laboratories that were established with an investment of approximately 2 million TL.
Research projects undertaken in laboratories associated with the Civil Engineering Department are leading to significant results under the topics of construction material, construction management, soil mechanics, and hydraulics.

The laboratories open to the disposition of academicians, and students studying in graduate as well as undergraduate programs are making significant contributions to the civil engineering sector of Northern Cyprus.

Head of the Cyprus International University (CIU) Department of Civil Engineering Assistant Prof. Dr. Ayşe Pekrioğlu Balkıs explained the principal aim of the Graduate Program of Civil Engineering as being that of equipping civil engineers with contemporary methods and knowledge, preparing them as experts capable of resolving problems within the domain of engineering, as well as preparing scientists who will take part in research works.

Pointing to a high rate of rise in the number of students enrolled in graduate studies, Assistant Prof. Dr. Balkıs underlined the Department was ensuring that thesis work would be undertaken as projects aiming to making positive contributions to the environment and society.

Indicating that CIU and the Department placed a great importance on research, CIU academician Balkıs emphasized that, through research, those students enrolled in quality graduate programs at CIU would be able to generate solutions for problems in the civil engineering sector in TRNC.

Pointing to the continuous rise in figures of graduating students, Ayşe Pekrioğlu Balkıs underlined the fact that most students graduating from the CIU Department of Civil Engineering landed a position with forthcoming construction companies in Turkey and many other countries around the world as an indicator of the CIU Department standing out in the crowd.

CIU Department of Civil Engineering – The first department ever to receive MÜDEK accreditation
Head of the Department of Civil Engineering Assistant Prof. Dr. Ayşe Pekrioğlu Balkıs reminded that in 2013 the CIU Department of Civil Engineering received a five year MÜDEK (Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Engineering Educational Programs) accreditation.

Informing that various activities such as presentations on different themes, technical trips, concerts, picnics, and sports events were organized by the Department annually on the occasion of the Construction Week, Assistant Prof. Dr. Balkıs said that students had the opportunity to reinforce through these activities what they had learned during lectures.

Pointing to the motto “Quality in Education ” as their point of departure, Balkıs defined the aim of their department as preparing at par with contemporary requirements qualified civil engineers much needed in the public and private sector .

In conclusion of her speech, Head of the Cyprus International University Department of Civil Engineering Assistant Prof. Dr. Ayşe Pekrioğlu Balkıs expressed, “We aim to educate our students into graduates who are equipped with, principal theoretical knowledge, autonomy of learning and research, and the ability to observe, to question the cause-effect link, to think critical, to generate creative solutions, and to take decisions guided by the responsibility that they bear as professionals in their domain; our graduates will be trustworthy team workers who respect the engineering ethics, who have developed communication skills, and are open to communication”.
