According to a writer on Ventures Africa- 'Unemployment has long been identified as a ticking time bomb in Nigeria and it is quite worrisome that employers claim Nigerian graduates are unemployable as a result of a lack of required skills for the present day job.' A realistic way out of this national problem is mentorship.
In recent years, most Nigerians graduate with unemployable skills and little to no professional skills required by most corporate organizations for employment. As a result, a large percentage of graduates are unemployed every year and, thereby, continuously adding to the exponential growth of youth unemployment. This is evident from the data presented by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS), stating the country’s unemployment rate increased to 9.9 percent in the third quarter of 2015, representing a fourth consecutive rise in these rates since the third quarter of 2014.
Mentors transfer wisdom with regards to ideas, values and morals of the organization and support mentees through counselling and support. They do all of this while providing information which their mentees would, otherwise, not have been able to access. Also, mentors are helpful in shaping the lives of young, less experienced colleagues while guiding them and as well as provide opportunities for growth by identifying situations and events which contribute to enhancing the knowledge and experience of the mentee.
Graduate unemployment in Nigeria can be attributable to the fact that employee education and skills acquired are inadequate to meet the demands of modern day jobs. Sufficient skills can be adopted from the act of mentoring as a good mentor represents both an anchor and a sail.
The Nigerian Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has announced that a low-interest loan scheme for one million young graduates will take off next year 2016. Emefiele said the scheme, which would be managed by the CBN in collaboration with commercial banks, was part of a government strategy to boost the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises sub-sector and curtail unemployment among the youth.
For many students, graduation marks the end of formal student life - the end of long spring breaks and of thinking that an 8:30am class is far too early. The aim of education is the knowledge, not of facts, but of values. To this end we wish all the Graduating Class of Fall 2015/2016 a successful world out there. May the odds be in your favour. In order to initiate the "Clearance" procedure, you are expected to fill in the Contact Details Update Form, which is available under the "Prospective Graduate" link in your portals until 15 January 2016. Please be informed that "Clearance Forms" may be collected from the Registrar's Office as of 22 January 2016.
NB.: The Rector's Office will be sending Graduation Ceremony invitations to your family. Eastern Mediterranean University, Faculty of Health Sciences organised an oath ceremony for the graduates of the 2014-2015 Academic Year Spring Semester. During the ceremony which took place at Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Center at 10:30 a.m. on 13 July 2015, around 541 graduates recited the medical oath.
The oath ceremony commenced with a moment of silence and the national anthem followed by a trio musical performance of the academic staff of EMU Fine Arts Education Department Music Teaching Program. After the trio performance, EMU Health Sciences Faculty Acting Dean Prof. Dr. Mehtap Malkoç provided information about the faculty and stressed the importance of the health services staff in the field of medicine. Prof. Dr. Malkoç put forth that their faculty endeavors to cater for the demand for qualified health services staff who would contribute to science both within the country and at an international level. Prof. Dr. Malkoç concluded her speech by extending her best wishes to the new graduates in their prospective careers.
Delivering a speech on behalf of the university, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam stated that EMU has obtained considerable achievements in the field of health education during the recent years. Prof. Dr. Osam also expressed his trust and confidence in the new graduates as they will reflect the quality of the university in their prospective careers. At the end of his speech, Prof. Dr. Osam extended his congratulations and best wishes to all graduates.
Following Prof. Dr. Osam, member of the TRNC Assembly from the Republican Turkish Party Dr. Arif Albayrak also delivered a speech and wished all graduates a future filled with success.
Following the opening addresses, graduates of Health Sciences Faculty, Nutrition and Dietetics Department, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department, Nursing Department, Health Management Department, Sports Sciences Department and School of Health Services’ Oral and Dental Health, Anaesthesia, Dialysis, Physiotherapy Technician, First and Emergency Health and Medical Imaging Program recited an oath with their department chairs and academic staff members.
Around 1500 Eastern Mediterranean University 2014-2015 Academic Year Spring Semester graduates bade farewell to Famagusta through a torchlight procession which took place at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, 14 July 2015.
Leaded by Vice Rector for Student Affairs Prof. Dr. Hıfsiye Pulhan, Vice Rector for Administrative Affairs Prof. Dr. Bekir Özer, 2014-2015 Academic Year graduates, academic and administrative staff members, and student families took part in the walk which commenced at Famagusta Academy for Development and finished at Eastern Mediterranean University. The graduates finished the torchlight procession at Ataturk Square of Eastern Mediterranean University, where they were welcomed by EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam.
Prof. Dr. Osam extended his best wishes to graduates in their new lives and expressed the university’s pride in their successful achievements. Following Prof. Dr. Osam`s address, graduates continued to celebrate their graduation at the same venue.

The event was attended by large numbers of graduating students and families as well as the Rector of EMU, Vice Rectors, Deans, Department Chairs and academic and administrative staff members.
The reception which started with a cinevision screening entitled “A Memory, A Smile” continued with the musical performance of EMU Fine Arts Education Department, Music Teaching Program academic staff members. During the event visual messages of 1990 Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department graduate and Palestinian Minister of Transportation, Communication and Information Allam MOUSA, 1989 Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department Graduate and NETAŞ International Markets General Director Ali Kuralkan and C-Section Creative Director, Journalism Department 2005 graduate Fatih Tüylüoğlu were displayed.
Following the screening of the messages of the aforesaid graduates, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam welcomed all graduates and families and expressed the university’s honor and pride in bringing the graduates to this meaningful day. Stressing his confidence in the new graduates, Prof. Dr. Osam added that graduation is the point where students’ efforts bear fruit. At the end of his address, Prof. Dr. Osam wished all graduates and families a pleasant night.
During the reception, former graduates who have completed their 25th anniversary following their graduation were presented medals by Prof. Dr. Osam. At the end of the event, a graduation cake was cut by Prof. Dr. Osam and Vice Rector for Student Affairs Prof. Dr. Hıfsiye Pulhan.
Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam Hosted Silver Anniversary Graduates in the Senate Hall
Graduates who were invited to EMU on the silver anniversary of their graduation came together with EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Osam in the Senate Hall. During the meeting, Prof. Dr. Osam provided information on the faculties, departments, accreditations as well as student and faculty profile and infrastructural qualities of the university. Stating that each graduate of EMU is an ambassador of EMU and the TRNC, Prof. Dr. Osam added that EMU has a good reputation worldwide, thanks to the graduates who pursue successful career opportunities in different corners of the world. At the end of the meeting, Prof. Dr. Osam presented gifts to silver anniversary graduates.

With the graduation of over 2000 students, the number of Eastern Mediterranean University’s alumni will reach 44,000. Graduates from 43 nationalities will start their new lives at different locations of the world following their graduation on 15 July 2015. Vice Rector for Student Affairs Prof. Dr. Pulhan stated that each graduate will contribute to the promotion of the university by acting as a honorary representative of the institution during the next phase of their lives.
President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Mustafa Akıncı and Speaker of the TRNC Assembly Dr. Sibel Siber are expected to attend the ceremony. During the ceremony which will commence with a moment of silence followed by the national anthem, symbolic tree planting ceremony and EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Osam’s opening address, graduates of associate, undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degree programs will receive their diplomas and awards. The ceremony will end with fireworks and throwing of the graduation caps into air.

Graduation Celebrations in EMU
Stating the importance of bidding farewell to the students as well as welcoming them, Vice Rector for Student Affairs Prof. Dr. Hıfsiye Pulhan put forth that a Graduation Reception for graduating students and their families will take place at the Rector’s Office Pool Area at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, 13 July 2015. All academic units, administrators, President and members of the Board of Trustees and members of the Rector’s Office will be celebrating graduates’ success at the aforesaid organization.
At 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 14 July 2015, a graduation ceremony rehearsal will take place at EMU Stadium. Following the completion of the rehearsal, graduates will take part in a “Torchlight Procession” commencing at Famagusta Academy for Development at 8:30 p.m. and ending at the Rector’s Office. Prof. Dr. Pulhan added that through the torchlight procession, students will bid farewell to the city symbolically.

EUL produced new graduates.
EUL’s 2014-2015 academic year graduates received their diplomas at the ceremony organized on 2nd July 2015. The ceremony started with graduates taking their places, a moment of silence, the Turkish national anthem and opening speeches at Lefke 16 Ağustos Kurtuluş Stadium at 19:00.
Dr. Sibel Siber, President of the parliament, Halil İbrahim Akça, Lefkoşa ambassador of Turkey and some members of parliament attended the ceremony. This year EUL graduated 437 students from associate programs, undergraduate programs and post graduate programs.
After a moment of silence for the Great Leader Atatürk, martyrs and decedent academicians, the ceremony continued with the speeches.
SİBER: “Be confident, determined, and hardworking to reach your goal”
She started her speech with saying that they are celebrating a beautiful day with the precious family of EUL, graduates and the parents. She said, “Today you are sailing to the future by receiving your diplomas. In order to achieve your goals, be confident, determined and study hard.”
AKÇA: “The achievements that EUL has showed are so important that it cannot be ignored.”
Halil İbrahim, the ambassador of Turkish Republic said that he was so pleased to attend the ceremony and he wished success to all the graduate students. Akça said “With the knowledge you have gained and the education you have received at EUL, you will be in a struggle in a very competitive environment to be in service for the greater benefit of your family, country and humanity”.
TOKEL: “You will work as representatives for TRNC and we will be very proud of your successes.”
Türkay Tokel, The Chairman of the Board of Trustees said that with the gained knowledge and skills, EUL graduates will be spreading all over the world and will be the representatives of EUL. He stated that, “You will work as representatives for TRNC and we will be very proud of your successes.”
Tokel congratulated the families who entrusted the most precious ones of theirs to EUL and who are preparing to welcome them back with pride and honour, as individuals equipped with contemporary professional skills.
YÜKSELEN: “EUL has become the fastest and the most stable growing university of TRNC”
Prof. DR. Mehmet Ali Yükselen, The Rector of EUL, started his speech by indicating that they are having a happy and honourable day as EUL and welcoming the graduates and their families.
Yükselen stated that university’s accreditation processes have been sustaining immovably by highlighting that university has become the fastest and most stable growing university of TRNC in line with the aim of being the reference point in higher education and university’s first international accreditation Pearson Edexcel was received by English Preparatory School. Yükselen mentioned the construction of KYK dormitories and Health Faculty Laboratories which were completed this year in order to make the university more liveable physically and the constructions of 10 thousand square meter dormitory, 6 thousand square meter Law Faculty central lecture halls are continuing.
Within the limits of University’s growing plans, this year 11 associate degree programs, 6 undergraduate programs, 6 postgraduate programs and 3 doctorate programs have been approved by YÖK and it was stated that with these new programs the university has achieved growth on 40% basis in one year. Yükselen stated that they didn’t only open up new programs but also equipped health and engineering laboratories. Yükselen also said that by upgrading infrastructure of information technology they have taken the first steps of the university’s sustainable growth.
