Near East University Faculty of Engineering has been accredited and awarded with EUR-ACE label by ENAEE (European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education). Based in Brussels, ENAEE is the top European network that authorizes accreditation and quality assurance agencies to award the EUR-ACE label to accredited engineering degree programs of a higher education institution.

The programs offered by Near East University Faculty of Engineering were previously accredited by ASIIN e. V. (Accreditation Agency for Degree Programs in Engineering, Informatics, the Natural Sciences and Mathematics), which is an international accreditation agency that based in Germany.

‘Nicosia: The story of a shared and contested city’ is a public history project aiming to provide the public and researchers with a historical overview of the city of Nicosia from 1878 to 1974. The project comprises seven interactive maps. The first map was created by Horatio Herbert Kitchener, and was the product of the first survey of Cyprus, conducted by him. The remaining maps come from the Land Survey Department of the Republic of Cyprus. The maps are enriched with demographic data, which are visually represented on each map and each respective municipal quarter.

On Friday, 15 January 2016 the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR) presented to the public a new interactive website containing the findings of a three-year-long research project, undertaken by the AHDR with funding from Norway Grants 2009-2014, in partnership with the Council of Europe, in the context of the project “Home for Cooperation”.

This unique and innovative website aims at gathering together  information on the most significant landmarks of Nicosia, as well as a collection of short personal stories and public scandals that took place in our common capital during the period 1878-1974.

The launch of the website took place at a public event at the Home for Cooperation (H4C) in Nicosia where representatives of the main communities of Cyprus were invited to share thoughts and hopes on how this project could contribute to aknowledging and preserving our respective, yet common heritage.

The website is currently available on www.nicosiaproject.eu in English, with the Greek and Turkish versions due to be released soon.

The Nicosia Municipality is planning to get tough on noise pollution following a sharp surge in complaints from residents in the last couple of years.

The municipality’s biggest complaints have been coming from old Nicosia which has been enjoying a rise popularity amongst tourists particularly after the opening of the Ledra Street crossing. In fact, the old Nicosia area is today regarded as the most popular place to frequent in the capital Nicosia.

But with that popularity has come the problem of noise pollution especially after the rise in the number of bars, clubs and cafes in the area. And with the introduction of the smoking ban, more and more establishments are taking to offering outdoor seating to customers.

The loud noise and general noise created by members of the public during late nights has prompted a surge in the number of complaints to the Nicosia Municipality. This, in turn, has prompted Nicosia Mayor to call for action and a new policy to deal with the problem.

Some of the new measures outlined in this proposal include stern penalties which include suspending licensing fees for repeat offenders or confiscation of audio equipment.

Both committees have now decided on a plan of action to put towards the municipality board for approval which include:

– To call on the police to increase inspections on such establishments and to implement tougher penalties in areas where there is noise pollution and indoor smoking.

– For the municipality to refuse the right to grant permits for establishments convicted of previous noise pollution offences.

– For the municipality to have the right to suspend permits of establishments and the jurisdiction to refer offenders to the courts.

– The right to cancelling certain privileges like free parking for establishments that are repeat offenders.

5.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded early on Thursday near Cyprus, the geological survey department said. The epicenter was however outside the shores of Cyprus but it was felt and recorded.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage as of Thursday July 30.

The 1am tremor's  epicenter was the sea area north east of Cyprus, some 200 kilometres from Nicosia, at a depth of 20 kilometres.

The quake was felt by residents of the Nicosia district, reports said.

Temperatures are expected to hit 40 degrees centrigrade, 40'C [104'F] in the TRNC capital Nicosia as of Thursday, as another heat wave heads to Cyprus.

Forecasters say the heat, mixed with higher humidity levels and dry winds will make inland areas uncomfortable, but conditions on the coasts will be milder at between 33-35 degrees centigrade.

The dry air and strong sun could also create a fire danger with conditions ripe for wildfires.

The heat could have health impacts, causing dehydration and exhaustion, particularly in people over age 65, infants and young children, people with medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, asthma or respiratory conditions.

People who have been consuming caffeine or alcohol are also at a higher risk of dehydration, public health officials said.

The business manager of Kasap Döner, which was opened recently, Erhan Beşay said that their objective is to support the economy through investments and to meet Turkish Cypriots with quality taste.

Erhan Başay emphasized that they expect that the profit gained in TRNC will be returned as an investment in the economy.

He also highligted that they serve services to Turkish Cypriot culture such as Akpınar patisseries, North Shields , Cheatue Lambosa, Leman Kültür, Camelot Beach Club and Simit Sarayı the last one Kasap Döner.

Erhan Başay stated that these investments have been made to aim a contribution to the TRNC economy as the employment rate has exceeded 1100 people. He also stated that they are proud of these achievements.

Next Target is Kyrenia

Erhan Başay who pointed that Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus, and the locomotive of the economy, is also stated that The Dereboyu Area is advanced in terms of cafe and restaurant culture and their aim is to open Kasap Döner in Kyrenia, after Nicosia.

‘’We are coming to make hamburger lover children to eat Kasap Döner.’’

Erhan Başay stated that The Kasap Döner was opened to service in Turkey 3 years ago and the main reason of bringing Kasap Döner to Cyprus was being the number one in the world as in Turkey and to maintain these achievements in Cyprus.

He indicating that the Döner can be eaten in every time and the people can be able to reach to this flavor from morning till late in night.

He also indicated that the other fast food brands use frozen products and additives but the Kasap Doner literally declare war to other fast food brands by using only salt and spices.

Mr. Başay said that their slogan is ‘’We are coming to make hamburger children eat Kasap Döner.’’

‘’We manufacture our own meat’’

He pointed out that the Franchises usually get their products and materials from abroad but, because of the ban of import of meat to TRNC,  all of their meat are manufactured in TRNC. He also indicated that they experienced big problems at the beginning. They tried all the meats gotten from all over the island were tested and consequently the best quality meat was found in the Karpaz area. On the other hand, he specified that these meats will be preserved their original tastes as 4 cooks will be brought from Turkey.

‘’Cyprus Pide on the Menu’’

Erhan Başay mentioned that all varieties of breads are made in their shops and they added The Cyprus Pide to the menu which is not seen on the menu in Turkey. On the other hand, she emphasized that the ‘’Trileçe’’ which is used as dessert is produced daily in Akpınar Patisserie.

‘’Being non-recognized and Isolations should not be emphasized”

Erhan başay stated that the economy is deteriorating day by day and the government should find a solution about this problem. He also expressed that the being non-recognized and Isolations should not be highlighted and the solutions must be produced immediately on the subject of tourism, university, agriculture, health, farming as an island country.

Scout leader Günaltay Durmuş who founded the SOS Children’s Village Scout Club in 2001, was remembered in a ceremony on Sunday.

His widow, and current SOS Children’s Village Scout Club Leader, Besime Durmuş held the ceremony at her husband’s grave side in Zeytinlik Cemetery in Kyrenia, with SOS Youth Facility youth leaders and SOS Children’s Village scouts.

After a minute’s silence, she made a speech, also marking “Scout World Thinking Day”.

SOS Youth Facility youth leader Rabia Özcömert said:

“Our enthusiastic youngsters from the SOS Youth Facility joined the SOS Children’s Village scouts who, with their tiny hands, laid flowers on the grave in memory of their founding leader.”

 Following the ceremony, members of the SOS Youth Facility Günaltay Durmuş Scout Club were joined by officials from the Lefkoşa branch of the Forestry Department in planting trees in a plot near the Hamitköy ring road.

They planted 50 eucalyptus trees, 50 cypress trees, and 25 pine trees.SOS Youth Facility youth leader Rabia Özcömert added:

 “By planting the trees our youngsters invested in their future, as well as learned about the environment.”

Cyprus International University Department of Special Needs Teaching, affiliated with the CIU Faculty of Education, held a seminar on “Natural Environment Teaching”. Prof. İbrahim Halil Diken of Anadolu University was present as speaker during the seminar which was held at Çevik Uraz Conference Hall.

Speaking of special needs education at the outset of his speech, Prof. İbrahim Halil Diken pointed out that mentally handicapped people, particularly children with mental disabilities in the age group of 0-6 years, needed to be observed at an early stage during their education with an aim to taking necessary measures.

Explaining that he was providing services for 120 students and their families at the institution where he was currently employed, Diken said that more conferences should be held in order to raise awareness about special education. Prof. Diken said, “there are three principal rules for special education teachers; to observe, to perceive, and to provide an appropriate response”. He underlined that children needed to be seen as what they were, i.e. as children. Diken explained that particularities of every single child needed to be known, pointing to how significant it was for any intervention to be appropriate for the developmental particularities of a given child.

Speaking of the significance of special needs education, Prof. Diken said that family members had a critical role to play in this type of education, with the initial training taking place in the womb. Explaining that children spent most of their time with their mothers, Prof. Dr. Diken claimed that children slept an average of 22 hours per day, spending the rest of the time interacting with whatever happens to be in their surrounding environment. Diken said “If you manage to render this interaction meaningful, so would this mean that you are undertaking natural environment education for the child”.

Prof. Diken explained that children should not be exposed to rules and obligations when developing their sense of knowledge acquisition, adding that they needed to be allowed to take the initiative concerning the study of observed objects and objects of interest, since only then would perception be augmented through education. Pointing out that special needs education teachers needed to assist families with the education of their children, Prof. Diken provided information on what approach parents needed to adopt during education.

In the final part of the seminar Diken projected special education relevant videos, allowing comments and questions by participants on whether or not the viewed conduct was appropriate.

At the conclusion of the seminar the Associate Dean for the Faculty of Education Prof. Fatoş Silman presented a plaque of appreciation to Prof. Diken.

Turkish company Vestel have won a tender to change the existing street lighting in Nicosia over to LED.

The tender, organised by KIB-TEK was won by Vestel-Celiksan consortium who will replace 10,000 light bulbs in Nicosia’s street lamps in the first phase of the project.

Eventually, it is planned to replace bulbs in 55,000 street lights, saving 8.5 million TL and 19 million kWs per annum.

Turan Erdogan, President of the Executive Board of Directors for the Vestel Group said they aimed at saving 90% of lighting energy, island wide.

Designed and manufactured by Near East University (NEU), and currently the only officially registered solar powered car of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), NEU-RA 25 was brought together with the public at Lemar Kaymakli Shopping Centre due to the events held on energy saving week.

According to the press info release from the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of Near East University, NEU-RA 25, which was designed and manufactured by NEU to draw attention to the significance and necessity of utilising solar power, was displayed at Lemar Kaymakli Shopping Centre as part of the events held on energy saving week.

Ahmet Savaşan pointed out that the energy demand was increasing directly proportional to the increase in the population but that the current energy sources were falling behind in meeting the needs. He added that once considering the rate of population increase around the world to the increase in need for energy, it was obvious that the need for energy was much greater.

Global warming is causing imbalances in the nature

Savaşan added that the amount of fossil fuel in the world was decreasing and emphasised that the drastic increase in the emission of carbon dioxide caused by burning fossil fuels was identified as the major reason for the change in the atmosphere leading to global warming.

Unfortunately, the negative results of global warming will be encountered globally

“It is widely excepted that due to global warming, in time the amount of rainfall will decrease, causing draughts, the level of the seas will increase due to melting of the ice bergs, certain settlement areas will be left below sea level and humanity will encounter floods, extremely strong winds, and the dangerous UV rays will easily reach Earth’s surface” said Savaşan.

Savaşan further expressed that fossil fuel was not only used as a means for energy but that it was also used as raw material in industry. He added that this was another reason to consider our fossil fuel reserve consumption as soon the world would face limited amount of fossil fuel. In this regard, he reemphasised that it was crucial for us to find other means of energy production so as to keep a sustainable better future for our planet.

Anyone wishing to leave a better, a cleaner environment to the future generations must save energy

Moreover, Savaşan expressed that energy consumption was a part of every day living and that anyone caring for this planet and who wishes to reserve the natural balance of the environment should be aware of the consequences of our actions and should therefore seriously consider alternative energy resources.

SOS Children’s Village has signed a protocol with the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Artisans and Shopkeepers (KTEZO), the Cyprus Turkish Union of Barbers, the Cyprus Turkish Union of Hairdressers, and the Cyprus Turkish Union of Beauticians for long term collaboration.

Signed on Thursday 22 January at SOS Children’s Village in Lefkoşa, the aim of the protocol is to provide children receiving care and support by SOS Children’s Village free services – such as haircuts and personal care – from specified union members. It also aims to give young people under SOS Children’s Village professional apprenticeship opportunities in these fields.

SOS Children’s Village Chairman Dr. Hacer Çerkez, KTEZO and C.T. Union of Hairdressers Chairman Mahmut Kanber, C.T. Union of Barbers Deputy Chairman Salih Ulaş, and C.T. Union of Beauticians Chairman Seral Sökmen were present to sign the agreement.

In his speech, Mahmut Kanber said: “We are so pleased to provide this support.

In order to raise a healthy generation for the community, we believe that we must help children from a young age.

We want to continuously work with SOS to raise healthy, knowledgeable and cultured generations.”

SOS Chairman Dr. Hacer Çerkez said there are currently 108 children receiving family based care under SOS Children’s Village, which was established in 1992.

She added that SOS Kindergarten provides educational services to children from both inside and outside of the Association, and the EU-funded Prevention of Child Abandonment and Family Strengthening Project supports families at risk of separating.

She ended her speech by thanking the unions for their crucial support.

Underlining the growing energy need of the TRNC, the scientific team of the University of Kyrenia evaluated It’s natural renewable energy potential.

According to the press release from the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of the University of Kyrenia, the scientific team of the University drew attention to the economic and environmental advantages of the renewable energy sources over the fossil fuel energy sources. The scientific team emphasized that wind power and solar energy potential are quite high in the country due to its geographic location and it would be more economical to use these alternative renewable energy sources to meet the growing energy need of the country instead of using fossil based energy.

Touching upon the dramatical increase in the world’s energy consumption, the scientific research team of the University of Kyrenia indicated that while fossil fuels were likely to remain an important source of energy, renewable energy sources such as wind and solar energy were gaining importance as a result of concerns over high fossil fuel prices and hazardous effects on ecosystem as well as greenhouse gas emission. The scientific team also highlighted that fossil fuel energy reserves would reduce due to extensive consumption and the prices would increase inevitably. Drawing attention to the climatic changes all over the world, the scientific team of the University of Kyrenia noted that fossil based energy sources such as coal, gas and fuel that currently used to generate electricity triggered the temperature rise along with the greenhouse effect.

For the last decades across the globe, there has been an increase in the use of wind power to generate electric energy with most affordable costs. The scientific team of the University of Kyrenia provided data relevant to the use of energy produced by wind power. According to this data, while the overall electric energy generated from wind power was 18,039 MW across the globe in 2000, this amount was increased to 152,000 MW in 2009 and to 260,000 MW in 2012. Besides, the cost of wind tribunes that used to generate electricity decreased 50% percent in the last 15 years. Developed countries such as Germany, Norway, Denmark, the USA, Japan and France are focused on using wind energy as an alternative and cheaper source of energy. As of November 2014, wind power provides almost 43 % of Denmark’s total electric consumption. Besides, Denmark has already reached its year 2020 governmental goal of installing 200 MW of photovoltaic capacity and increased the total PV capacity from 90,000 private installations amounts to 500MP, a total of 3,400 MW is expected to be installed by 2030.

Touching upon the importance that attached by EU on the use of sustainable energy sources, the scientific team of the University of Kyrenia stated that the European countries have to generate at least 13% of their total energy consumptions from sustainable energy resources in the line with the standards set by the European Union. Underlining the high cost of electric power in TRNC, the scientific team noted that 1 kWh currently cost approximately 0, 19 €. The team emphasized that generating electricity from wind and sunlight would be an appropriate investment in the country in which sunlight and wind were available at least throughout ten months a year. The scientific team calculated the value of 1 kWh wind power as 0,015€ to 0,017€ which is much cheaper.
