METU University - TRNC presents Green Brain of the Year 2016 [Competition]

ABOUT THE CONTEST

METU NCC Sustainable Environment and Energy Systems Graduate Program, which has been established as a unique academic program in the Middle East to serve the most critical needs of our globe in the 21st century, proudly presents the Green Brain of the Year Contest. The contest has been devised to increase and enhance the international awareness of the Vital Triad: Sustainable Environment, Sustainable Energy, and Sustainable Water Resources among youth, specifically high school and university students.

Green Brain of the Year Contest accepts submissions from university students. The contest is also known as the International Project Competition (IPC), and emphasizes original ideas which have been evaluated for feasibility. The competitors are expected to form a team of two, come up with an original project to tackle a sustainability problem in support of the Vital Triad, analyze feasibility, and submit their work in a properly formatted paper (according to the provided IPC guide) of up to 2000 words in English. A limited number of figures and tables can be used to describe the addressed problem, the solution as a system and/or a process flow, feasibility and results. The electronic submissions through the IPC web site will be evaluated by a jury panel based on:

*Problem Relevance to Sustainability,
*Originality, Feasibility, and Impact of Solution,
*Verification of Feasibility through Analysis or Experimentation,
*Quality of Writing and Illustrations.

Application deadline is 25 May 2016.

The five finalist teams from both ICPC and IPC will be invited to METU NCC (all expenses paid) in September 2016 to present their project in front of the jury.

The winner team will earn the title of “Green Brain of the Year 2015” (IPC). All finalists will attend a guided tour in Northern Cyprus. The first, second, and third runner-up team members will be rewarded a cash prize. (Both  team members have to do the presentations on the campus personally)

We would like to hereby invite talented university students to submit their projects to IPC 2016, and start contributing ideas to a sustainable future for our beautiful globe.

Top 100 World Universities by Reputation - African universities must be ‘audacious’...

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, founded in 2004, provide the definitive list of the world's best universities, evaluated across teaching, research, international outlook, reputation and more. THE’s data are trusted by governments and universities and are a vital resource for students, helping them choose where to study

****

African universities must become more “audacious” and instill a “spirit of subversion” into their missions if they are to assist in the continent’s transformation, according to an expert on African development.

Adebayo Olukoshi, regional director for Africa and West Asia at the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, told the Times Higher Education Africa Universities Summit that many African institutions have “become too normal”.

“Universities must define themselves as sites of continental renaissance – a renaissance in which the power of ideas and the reconciliation of ideas and policy, which has been missing, will become an important driving force for change,” he said.

He added that poverty reduction would be welcome, but it “cannot be a strategy for [Africa’s] development”.

Speaking as part of a panel discussion on reputation building, he added that it is important for African universities to “define notions of excellence” that “speak to the immediate and specific needs of our context” and reject “abstract” goals, such as achieving “world-class excellence” or producing “world-class leaders”. He said that this is necessary to ensure that institutions do not become “completely irrelevant” even when they “appear to be defined as the gold standard in higher education”.

UPDATED List of Africa's new university ranking so prepare to be shocked...and maybe not

AS the Times Higher Education (THE) Africa universities summit kicked off July 30 at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, the main buzz of the event was the landmark unveiling of a new African university ranking.

And it’s here, just released Friday July 31, though only ranking the top 30 of Africa’s approximately 2,600 higher education institutions.

These results are essentially based on the amount of citations there are for the university’s work.

They are derived from the methodology for the current world university ranking, using the 13 factors (below), combining THE’s own enormous database of statistics along with the Elsevier’s Scopus database - a system that highlights some of the continent’s top performers in terms of how often research papers are referred to and cited by other academics globally.

This methodology is designed for the research-led globally facing university. Times Higher Education emphasised that not everyone in Africa will find the metrics appropriate to their mission or their strategic priorities making this ranking a starting point of a longer, inclusive conversation involving African institutions.
