#ThrowbackThursday: Miss CIU - Africa Competition // Natasha Hara [PICS]

The CIU African Student Association (ASA) held a meeting on campus on May 2014 to discuss general business and to announce the winner of the 'Miss CIU' competition.

Kenneth Ikenna Ufearo, the president of the African Student Association, said that the aim of the organization is to unite the students at Cyprus International University and also in African Universities nearby. The well being of African Students was also discussed in general.

Ufearo described the meeting as a 'pre-show event' for a larger gathering of African students which took place on the 17th of May at the Cultural Centre of Eastern Mediterranean University. As part of the preparations for this event, the CIU-ASA elected one of their members to represent the university at the 'Miss Africa' beauty pageant. Natasha Hara, from Zambia, was elected and was Awarded the title 'Miss CIU'.

Hara edged out the Audrey Chihoho from Zimbabwe and Ella  Edochi from Nigeria to take the title.

She said, 'I am very humbled to be named Miss CIU. I think this is a very good beginning for Africans to promote young ladies to be confident and to be able to bring out the best in them. I did not expect to win but I guess I tried my best and maybe I do deserve it.'

Concerning any ambitions for the future, Hara added, 'I think I am going to set up an academy where I promote young ladies to model and since I want to be a fashion designer I will show off my designs.'

The ASA (African Students Association) was recently recognised by CIU as the official body of all African Students studying in Cyprus International University, having existed informally prior to this. The Association comes under the structure of the university, who helped to organize the event.

According to Ufearo, the president of the African Student Association, 'the Association meets frequently to discuss ways to manage all of the students, to promote co-existence among students and educate more students on the school Rules and Regulations'.

The Association have representatives from various African nations like Nigeria, Uganda, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. However, Ufearo also stated that non-African students are free to attend ASA events.
