Road deaths in Cyprus down by Half, Study Notes!
The death toll from road accidents has decreased by half in Cyprus` highways from 2004 to 2013, according to the 28th PIN Flash Report, a study published by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC).
The study has been presented in the framework of Road Safety PIN (Performance Index) programme, with road safety data from the EU member states, Switzerland, Israel, Norway and Serbia.
During the 2004-2013 period, death toll was reduced by 49% in EU highways, while the reduction was lower in other types of roads, reaching 44%.
For a more reliable comparison on Cyprus, data between the two five-year terms 2004-2008 and 2009-2013 present a reduction of 50% in traffic-related deaths, similar to the EU average.
Moreover, road safety in Cyprus in the 2011-2013 period is in line with EU average levels.
ETSC notes that there must be no complacency in view of the reduction of road deaths, since 1,900 people died in the road during 2013 and a total of 27,500 since 2004. — (FG/Agencies)
