US Ambassador to Cyprus John Koenig to stand down this 2015 summer


"Ambassador Koenig’s term as US ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus is for three years and his departure in the Summer of 2015 has always been anticipated” the U.S Embassy said.

Another diplomat will be named to take the place of John Koenig, the US ambassador to Cyprus, the US embassy said Monday in a press release, adding that Koenig`s departure has been anticipated.

"Ambassador Koenig’s term as US ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus is for three years and his departure in the Summer of 2015 has always been anticipated” the embassy said.

"Another diplomat will be named to replace him, a process that requires the White House, the US Department of State, and the US Congress to all take actions” it added.

BRIEF BACKGROUND

American diplomat John Koenig was selected by the White House to serve as the US Ambassador in Nicosia in 2012.

Koenig has served as political advisοr in Cyprus (1994-97), in the US Embassy in Athens (1997 – 2000) and as Consul General in Thessaloniki (2000 – 2003).

In September 2009 he was appointed Political Advisor to the Commander, Allied Joint Force Command in Naples.

He has held a number of senior positions in US diplomatic missions in Europe.
