EMU Communication and Media Studies Faculty Commemorates Wilbert Skip Norman
Eastern Mediterranean University Communication and Media Studies Faculty organised a commemoration ceremony for the former faculty member, photography artist and film director Wilbert Skip Norman who perished on 18 March 2015. During the ceremony, Norman’s colleagues and former students shared their memories about him.
In line with Norman’s will, photography artist and EMU Communication and Media Studies Faculty academic staff member İsmail Gökçe brought Norman’s ashes from the USA to Northern Cyprus. In his address, Gökçe stated that Norman had an extreme love towards Cyprus and always wanted his ashes to be poured into the sea in Cyprus. He stated that traveled to the USA for this purpose but he believes Norman arrived in Cyprus before him as on 8 April, an extremely rare black flamingo was spotted in Cyprus. He believes it was him. Gökçe added that Norman passed away with a big smile on his face.
One of the former students of Skip Norman, Emre Oskay stated that he was a perfect person. Oskay added that everyone will miss him. His former colleague Serra İnci Çelebi added that he was a very honest friend with a big heart.
Adding that Skip Norman was like a brother to him, EMU Communication Faculty academic staff member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuğrul İlter shared one of his memories about Norman with the audience. Reminding everyone that people used to smoke indoors in the faculty years ago, İlter stated that Norman came to the faculty with a gas mask to protest this situation. İlter concluded his speech by saying that he lost his brother.
Former dean of EMU Communication and Media Studies Faculty Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan added that he clearly remembers the day when Norman entered into his room with a gas mask. İrvan also stated that he used to hide his cigarettes when Norman came into his room.
Following the commemoration ceremony, named after Wilbert Skip Norman, the opening of EMU Communication and Media Studies Faculty’s Photography Studio took place.
