REPORT: Cause of the Varosha fire incident that happened on Friday June 12 discovered

Following investigations into the cause of the fire which began in Derinya and spread to the fenced-off town of Varosha last Friday, the police have discovered that the fire was started accidentally by a soldier in the area.

The report said that the solider who was playing with a lighter panicked when a spark from the lighter started the fire. He left the area after panicking; the fire was seen by other military personnel who intervened to try and put it out.

Police said an enquiry has opened on the soldier’s action and it will be brought to the attention of the court.
