United States re-asserts its support for a comprehensive Cyprus settlement

US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland has said that the United States strongly supports a Cyprus settlement by Cypriots for Cypriots and that Washington is encouraged by the leaders’ hard work towards reunification.

“We will continue to support these leaders as they take difficult steps but we want this to be a Cypriot owned, Cypriot led process” she said following her meeting with President Mustafa Akinci at his office in North Nicosia earlier this year.

The US diplomat said that she had a productive meeting with Akinci and added:

“We are hopeful of both leaders making courageous decisions for peace, thinking about their people, thinking about the future of this island. We also had a very good strategic conversation about the importance of peace and reconciliation not just for all the people of Cyprus but also for this turbulent neighbourhood which needs stability, which needs peace, which needs a positive example of two communities living well together. So the US will continue to support this”.

Science Knows Why People Love Donald Trump — and It's Scary

The most interesting candidate in the United States presidential race is, unequivocally, Donald Trump. He is drawing crowds and doing well in polls, and at the Republican debate he dominated the stage and the next day’s headlines. Trump is in our Twitter feeds, in our dinner conversations, all over our social media and currently the ringleader of the political arena. But why is that?

A riveting series of articles in Scientific American has attempted to explain why, psychologically, the public is so enamored with a business tycoon that “tells it like it is.” They are hypothesizing that his very open distaste for political correctness is at the core of his popularity, and while he “flip flops” as much as the next politician, we’re fooled into believing him because what he says is so far outside what is expected. That is a type of dependability: We can count on him to say whatever he is thinking or feeling with little regard of how it will be perceived. That dependability is vital when considering “ambiguity intolerance,” or how comfortable people are with not knowing the future.

The science shows that people who are anxious about the future tend to lean more politically conservative. They want someone that is not going to act erratically, someone you can predict. Trump, while his statements are sometimes shocking, is at the very least consistent. What is most interesting is that while people may be turned off by the content of Trump’s statements, they are so at ease with his persona of “truth telling” that what he is saying seems to matter less than the fact that he’s saying it.

That means that we as a public can think that Trump is sexist, racist, or whatever the inflammatory comment du jour is, and still be more comfortable with him as a candidate because he appears to not be lying or hiding his feelings.

It becomes slightly frightening to unpack the implications of this. Have politicians gotten so PC that we will praise anyone who embraces a lack of it? And also, isn’t it odd that we should be so enthralled with someone who says things the majority of Americans may find problematic (e.g., his comments on John McCain and Megyn Kelly)? It’s a troublesome sign implying we are so used to politicians lying that we actually expect it, and that when someone comes along who is refusing to play the game, we reward them even if we don’t like them. There are lessons to be learned on both sides. Politicians should take note that the public is tired of hearing what they think we want to hear, and the public should, as always, stay informed and aware.

VIDEO: California Lake Mysteriously Goes Dry Overnight leaving Thousands of Fish Dead

Residents are perplexed after thousands of fish were left dead recently when a Northern California reservoir mysteriously went dry overnight.

“Something went haywire,” Aaron Seandel, chairman of a water quality committee, told the Sacramento Bee.

Residents reported that people were out fishing on the lake Saturday. They equated what happened to a bathtub being drained.

PG&E, which owns rights to the water, told news outlets that no one opened the dam and that the water simply ran out after after officials made the decision to stop repairing a valve that kept getting clogged.

“This makes me feel like they didn’t want to do a fish rescue and that it was easier to open that sucker up Saturday night,” a resident said.

11-Year-Old Graduate With 3 Degrees From American River College Breaks Record.

An 11-year-old boy receiving three degrees became the youngest graduate at American River College this year, by far.

Tanishq Abraham graduated from high school at age 10, and now has his sights set on a medical degree.  He told KCRA he wasn’t intimidated by taking classes with students twice his age.

“Even on the first time I came to a college class, I wasn’t really nervous, so, this isn’t much of a big thing to me,” Abraham said.

Abraham graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA, which didn’t come as a surprise to his mother.

“Even in kindergarten he was pretty ahead, two years ahead, and just went from there,” she said.
Tanishq posted a picture of the family celebrating his graduation to Twitter.

Want to Be an Astronaut? NASA is Currently Accepting Applications for Future Explorers.

Recently named the best place to work in the United States federal government for the fourth year in a row, NASA is looking for the best candidates to work in the best job on or off the planet. The astronaut candidate application website now is live and accepting submissions through Feb. 18.

You may apply at:

https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/423817000

The agency expects to announce final candidate selections in mid-2017. Those chosen may fly on any of four different U.S. spacecraft during their careers: the International Space Station, two commercial crew spacecraft currently in development by U.S. companies, and NASA’s Orion deep-space exploration vehicle.

“NASA is on an ambitious journey to Mars and we’re looking for talented men and women from diverse backgrounds and every walk of life to help get us there,” said NASA Administrator and former astronaut Charles Bolden. “Today, we opened the application process for our next class of astronauts, extraordinary people who will take the next giant leap in exploration. This group will launch to space from U.S. soil on American-made spacecraft and blaze the trail on our journey to the Red Planet.”

NASA astronauts will again launch to the International Space Station from Florida’s Space Coast on American-made commercial spacecraft -- Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner and the SpaceX Crew Dragon. These spacecraft will allow NASA to add a seventh crew member to each station mission, effectively doubling the amount of time astronauts will be able to devote to research in space, expanding scientific knowledge and demonstrating new technologies.

Astronauts also will lift off again from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard the Orion spacecraft, launched on the agency’s Space Launch System rocket, to unprecedented missions in lunar orbit. There, the space agency will learn more about conducting complex operations in a deep space environment before moving on to longer duration missions as it progresses on its journey to Mars.

To help accomplish this work, NASA will select qualified astronaut candidates from a diverse pool of people with a wide variety of backgrounds, including engineers, scientists and physicians. According to the professional networking site LinkedIn, some 3 million of the site’s members working in the United States appear to meet the minimum academic eligibility requirements for the job.

“NASA’s mission, and what we need from the astronauts helping to carry it out, has evolved over the years,” said Brian Kelly, director of Flight Operations at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. “Some people would be surprised to learn they might have what it takes. We want and need a diverse mix of individuals to ensure we have the best astronaut corps possible.”

Astronaut candidates must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science or mathematics. An advanced degree is desirable. Candidates also must have at least three years of related, progressively responsible professional experience, or at least 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft. Astronaut candidates must pass the NASA long-duration astronaut physical.

“The Office of Personnel Management is proud to support NASA’s efforts to recruit our country’s next generation of astronauts,” said Beth Cobert, acting director of OPM. “One of this agency's primary goals is to help attract, recruit, hire and retain the best and most talented workforce to serve the American people. We stand ready to help NASA find and support the talent it needs to fulfill its exciting mission to Mars. I’m proud to help agencies across government shape the federal workforce of the future by providing such tools as USAJOBS, our one-stop source for federal job and employment information.”

U.S President Obama Appoints A Nigerian, Adewale Adeyemo As Deputy National Security Adviser

President Barack Obama has tapped Adewale “Wally” Adeyemo, who served in top roles at the Treasury Department, to succeed Caroline Atkinson as his deputy national security adviser for international economic affairs. Ms. Atkinson has served in her current post since June 2013, a position that includes coordinating U.S. participation in the annual summits of the Group of 20 and Group of Seven countries.

Mr. Adeyemo, 34, joined the White House’s National Economic Council as deputy director this fall from the Treasury, where he served most recently as the deputy chief of staff to Secretary Jacob Lew. He was the Treasury’s lead negotiator on the currency agreement that was part of the Pacific trade deal. Mr. Adeyemo also worked on Treasury’s response to crises in Ukraine and Greece and in 2010 was one of the first officials charged with standing up the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

In a statement, Mr. Obama thanked Ms. Atkinson for her service and said he was grateful that Mr. Adeyemo would carry on her work. Mr. Adeyemo had been nominated by Mr. Obama to serve as assistant Treasury secretary for international markets and development, but a White House official said Mr. Adeyemo had asked the president to withdraw the nomination given his new role. Mr. Lew said that Mr. Adeyemo had “developed a network of international relationships in economic offices around the world to promote U.S. interests effectively.”

Former Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said Mr. Adeyemo, who joined the administration in 2009, was a “natural diplomat with a great feel for policy.” The position has served as a springboard to even higher profile international finance posts. Michael Froman, who is currently the U.S. trade representative, held the post under both Mr. Obama and President Bill Clinton. Federal Reserve governor Lael Brainard, who previously served as a senior Treasury official in the Obama administration, held the post in the Clinton administration.

RIDICULOUS: Man killed for grabbing last piece of chicken, [Police bulletin]

One man is dead and another is accused of fatally stabbing him — all over a piece of chicken. Five men had been making dinner and drinking in an apartment in western Houston, USA. But police said Rivera became angry when Gonzalez took the last piece of chicken.

Reinaldo Cardoso Rivera, 38, of Houston was charged late last week with murder in connection with the Friday death of Darwin Perez Gonzalez, 34, of Houston.

An argument escalated into a fist fight that was taken out into the parking lot of the complex. Rivera then stabbed Gonzalez and fled the scene with the knife, police said.

Rivera later returned to the scene and admitted to police that he had stabbed Gonzalez. Rivera, whose case file says he is not a U.S. citizen, was arrested, charged and is being held in Harris County jail on $200,000 bond.

His next court date is Dec. 16.

"I just felt that a human life taken over a piece of chicken is ridiculous,” neighbor John McDonald told KPRC-TV, Houston.

Council on Foreign Relations [CFR]: Nigerian President Buhari's visit to USA to Reset Bilateral Relationship

At the invitation of the Obama administration, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is making an official visit to Washington, D.C. from July 20 to July 24. The visit is an opportunity to reset a bilateral relationship that had chilled under former President Goodluck Jonathan, in part because of the Nigerian security service’s human rights violations in the fight against the Islamist insurgent group Boko Haram, and in part because of vocal criticism from the Jonathan administration that the United States was not doing enough to help in the struggle against Boko Haram.

Now, an indication of the importance of the visit to the Obama administration is that President Buhari will be staying at Blair House, the official guest house, even though this is not a state visit, which are usually arranged long in advance and more ceremonial than substantive.

Nigeria matters to the United States. It is by far the largest country in Africa by population, has the continent’s largest economy, and has been an important strategic partner for the United States. However, Nigeria also faces difficult challenges. Its Boko Haram insurgency destabilizes it and its neighbors. Domestic corruption is rampant. In the March elections, Buhari campaigned on a platform of restoring Nigerian security and fighting corruption, but now the Nigerian electorate’s expectations about what he can accomplish in the short term appear unrealistically high.

In the Obama administration, Buhari has special credibility because he was elected president in Nigeria’s freest elections since the 1999 restoration of civilian government. The Obama administration has hailed them as a major step forward for Nigerian and African democracy. Buhari is also the first opposition candidate to be elected president in Nigeria’s history. According to official statements, President Buhari will meet separately with President Obama, Vice President Biden, the secretaries of state, treasury, and commerce, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, the deputy secretary of defense, and the U.S. trade representative.

As for Congress, President Buhari will meet with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Congressional Black Caucus. President Buhari will also make formal speeches at the Corporate Council for Africa and at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. This is an exceptional turnout for Washington, D.C. in July and with Congress in recess.

In keeping with his emphasis on simplicity, President Buhari’s delegation will be very small. He will be accompanied by five governors, including that of Borno state, which is where Boko Haram has been most active. Buhari has thus far made no cabinet appointments. Accordingly, he is traveling with the permanent secretaries [senior civil servants that run departments in the absence of cabinet ministers] of defense, foreign affairs, industry, and trade and investment.

According to official Nigerian spokesmen, President Buhari’s agenda is to advance bilateral cooperation in combating Boko Haram, to encourage growth in U.S. trade and investment in Nigeria, and to garner support for his signature “war on corruption.”

Mirroring that agenda, the White House press secretary said, “President Obama looks forward to discussing with President Buhari our many shared priorities including U.S.-Nigeria cooperation to advance a holistic, regional approach to combating Boko Haram, as well as Nigeria’s efforts to advance important economic and political reforms that will help unlock its full potential as a regional and global leader.”

The Buhari visit provides the opportunity to advance the bilateral relationship. However, it is unlikely to be the occasion of dramatic announcements or initiatives.

The day after President Buhari departs Washington, President Obama leaves for Ethiopia and Kenya. Obama has been criticized for visiting two countries that, while U.S. allies on security issues, have questionable human rights and elections records. Some African watchers have questioned President Obama’s omission of Nigeria on his trip, especially following the successful March elections. The Buhari visit to Washington may address those concerns.
