CIU!: Agriculture in Northern Cyprus discussed at CIU [FAST]


An orientation meeting was held for students enrolled in the Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Technologies for the academic year 2014-2015. The Dean of the faculty, Prof. Dr. İbrahim Baktır, as well as lecturers Prof. Dr. Ahmet Aker and Prof. Dr. Süer Yüce held speeches during the meeting whereby they pointed out to contributions that the Faculty would make to agriculture in Northern Cyprus.

Water arriving from Turkey shall be utilized in agriculture via appropriate methods 

Speaking at the commencement of the meeting, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Aker pointed out that among the principal aims of the Faculty, which was established 2 years ago, was that of educating and equipping farmers to find means of enhancing the quality of agricultural products. Explaining that water arriving from Turkey would be utilized in agriculture via appropriate methods in order to produce efficiently, Aker said “through the Faculty we shall not only facilitate a vision to be adopted by our students, but also develop agricultural technology in Northern Cyprus”

Students will be equipped with extensive knowledge about agricultural production and will have enhanced agricultural vision

The Dean, Prof. İbrahim Baktır added that the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Technology [FAST] would do their best to promote agriculture in North Cyprus and to represent North Cyprus internationally. Pointing out that Northern Cyprus is endowed with a great potential for agriculture, Baktır said “We shall put to work all the know-how which has been accumulated since the 1970s.” Underlining that graduate degree programs would also be established in the near future, Prof. Dr. İbrahim Baktır explained that academic exchange programs would be undertaken between Dutch universities and CIU.

An agricultural infrastructure will be built up with a technological focus

In his speech, Prof. Süer Yüce stated that their aim in North Cyprus was building up an agricultural infrastructure with a technological focus. Yüce said “We shall ‘sow’ in Northern Cyprus all the grains that have been accumulated in our ‘pouch’ until this day.”
