Head of TRNC Telecommunications Department: Superfast internet in TRNC ‘before the end of the year’

Speeds will range from 10 up to 100Mb, allowing a music album to be downloaded in five seconds or a 1.8GB movie in less than three minutes.

Fibre optic cables capable of delivering download speeds of up to 100Mb will be in place by the end of the year, the head of the Telecommunications Department has announced.

Doğan Şah told reporters recently that testing of the superfast broadband system would start in the pilot area of Gönyeli, following the issuing of a six million TL tender to install the services, which would be available to 18,000 subscribers. He said access would then be extended to residents in Lefkoşa and Hamitköy.

“Our biggest aim is to strengthen the existing ADSL system and provide citizens with a high speed quality internet service,” Mr Sah said. He also thanked the Ministry of Finance for allocating funds to the project.
