NEU Assist. Prof. Dr. Saliha Feyza Yaycı: “General Anaesthesia is Quite Safe for Patients”

General anaesthetics are medications used to cause a loss of consciousness so you’re unaware of surgery. According to research, death risk due to general anaesthesia is rather low and 30% patients who are to have surgery are more afraid of general anaesthesia than having the surgery per se.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Saliha Feyza Yaycı from the Department of Anaesthesiology and Reanimation of NEU made a statement to the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of Near East University and expressed that general anaesthesia was generally perceived wrongly by patients, even in well developed countries and that this perception was due to the fact that being unconscious is accepted to be the same as death. However, death due to anaesthesia is one in ten thousand and this rate is rather close to death during pregnancy.

Anaesthesia is safe except significant issues…

Assist. Prof. Dr. Saliha Feyza Yaycı further expressed that depending on the degree of the surgery and the seriousness of the disease, there is a higher risk of death. Although it is rare, the following are cases which could result in death: coarctation of the aorta; significant coronary-artery disease; and insufficient circulation such as due to shock. Other than the cases mentioned above, unsuccessful intubation of the respiratory track, allergic reactions, wrong drug and blood administration are some other possible cases which could result in death during anaesthesia.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Saliha Feyza Yaycı furher added that during modern anaesthesia, patients are followed up on by a team of anaesthetists regarding circulation; oxygen of the organs and tissues; the speed and rhythm of the heart, the patient’s pain assessment, etc.

Institutions to administer anaesthesia should adhere to standards!

Assist. Prof. Dr. Saliha Feyza Yaycı emphasised that institutions to administer anaesthesia should adhere to the standards proposed by the “Helsinki Declaration for patient safety in Anaesthesiology” which aims to provide a focus for improvements in the safety of patient care in anaesthesiology and related medical fields. She further stated that patients should visit an anaesthetist and take the necessary precautions if the patient has diseases such as high blood pressure; diabetes; asthma; goitre. She ended her words by stating that the institution that the patient is planning to have an operation in should be aware that it is highly essential for the institution to have monitoring unit on blood pressure; heart rate; oxygen saturation; carbon-dioxide pressure.
